Poland

Saturated with deep reminders of its tumultuous past, Poland today has been remarkably transformed and preserved after invasions and devastating war. Filled with medieval towns, humbling historical attractions and sacred sites, Poland offers a wealth of history and culture to absorb.

Poland’s history is long and daunting, shaped by a series of invasions and the ravages of two world wars. While Polish lands have been inhabited by tribes since the Stone Age, the Slavs were the first to settle on the lands and the first Polish state was formed in the 10th century. During this era, the Jewish community also settled and burgeoned in Poland.

Over the centuries, Poland has been invaded by the Mongols, Swedes and Soviets, but perhaps its most chilling time in history was the German occupation during World War II. Poland still drips with severe reminders of this horrendous time in history, when the Germans sought to wipe out the Polish nation, shipping Poles and Jews to ghettos, work camps and concentration camps. Today, you can see history for your own eyes at the concentration camp in Auschwitz and the ghetto in Warsaw, now both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

While history has left some unsettling but humbling marks on the country, Poland is also packed with magnificent castles, palaces and religious sites that deserve admiration. In Warsaw, don’t miss seeing the Wilanow Palace, the residence of Polish King Sobieski - Victor of Vienna. In Czestochowa, marvel at the beautiful Paulite Monastery at Jasna Gora, where you’ll see the portrait of Our Lady “The Black Madonna,” supposedly painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. In Krakow, visit the opulent royal castle and cathedral on Wawel Hill, where you can admire the priceless art and ancient mementos. In Poznan, make sure to explore the Renaissance Town Hall and the numerous Gothic churches.

Poland also exudes strong culture inspired by both Eastern and Western worlds. As the birthplace of famous classical composer Chopin, Poland exudes a prominent music culture that features orchestras, operas and festivals. You may even want to enjoy some Polish Polka in this musical country!

Poland is also crammed with museums and galleries, from heavy history museums to smaller, specialty museums housing toys and collectables. Culture and history enthusiasts will have more than enough to take in.
