Optionals

On every itinerary, we offer a range of optional excursions that allow you to further enhance your experience should you so choose. These are purchased when you are on your trip, via your Trafalgar Travel Director. Depending on the region visited these can be paid with cash or credit card.

  • AMALFI

    • + AMALFI COAST AND POSITANO EXPERIENCE We travel by exclusive transport, passing delightful villages and spectacular scenery along the incredible Amalfi Coast to Positano, this most celebrated town, as well as a Unesco World Heritage site. There will be time to shop for the famous local clothing or ceramics or perhaps enjoy a glass of wine in a cafe overlooking the beach.

    • + CAPRI HIGHLIGHTS Amazing views are in store as we tour the famous 'jet-set' island of Capri. Our excursion includes a cruise around the island to view the famous Faraglioni rocks, and a visit to the villa of Swedish author Axel Munthe, whose gardens are rated amongst the finest in Europe. Private mini buses take us to Anacapri (top of the island), a photographer's dream. (In the event of bad weather a light lunch in a local restaurant will replace the cruise.)

    • + DINNER ON THE AMALFI COAST A short drive takes us to a restaurant in a stunning location. Here we enjoy local cuisine and Neapolitan hospitality in elegant surroundings. Drinks included.

    • + VISIT TO RAVELLO We travel by coach and minibus to the balcony of the Amalfi coast. Ravello, famous for its annual music festival is perched high above the terraced groves from which the views are breathtaking. With our local guide we will enjoy a visit to the gardens of the Villa Rufolo, which inspired Wagner, as well as free time to stroll, or visit the 11th century cathedral.

  • ROME

    • + ANCIENT AND CHRISTIAN ROME Explore Rome's past. Visit the Catacombs where the early Christians assembled to escape persecution and which were used as underground cemeteries. Then to the famous Basilica of St Pauls outside the walls, where the Apostle is buried.

    • + INTRODUCTION TO ROME BY NIGHT A superb drive through Rome, seeing some of the most impressive sights that this city has to offer. Afterwards with our licensed local guide we will stroll to beautiful Piazza Navona with its fountains, trattorias and outside cafes, followed by a visit to Piazza Venezia to see the Capitoline Hill and Mussolini's headquarters during WWII (Palazzo Venezia)

  • VENICE

    • + CANALS OF VENICE An unforgettable introduction to this unique and magical city! We cruise along the Grand Canal by private water taxi, admiring the magnificent and elegant palazzos. We see the Rialto Bridge and then reach 'the most beautiful outdoor drawing room in the world', St Mark's Square. Later during your Gondola Ride, you will glide along the picturesque smaller canals, sipping Italian champagne while a duo of musicians entertains.

    • + LAGOON CRUISE WITH LUNCH OR DINNER Take some time off the beaten track! We are taken by private boat to the nearby islands in the lagoon of Venice. See the island of Murano where the glass blowers live. Lunch or dinner is taken at the picturesque 'Island of the fishermen', Burano, famous for its multicoloured houses and a photographer's paradise. Drinks are also included.

    • + VENETIAN GLORIES Accompanied by a local expert we are taken into the magnificent Doges' Palace - home to the rulers of the Venetian republic for hundreds of years. We are shown the main highlights of the palace and its elegant courtyards, before entering the Byzantine Basilica of St. Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of the city of Venice. Here we admire the stunning golden mosaics and wonderful Byzantine architecture. (entrance fees included).

  • FLORENCE

    • + FLORENTINE DINNER WITH ENTERTAINMENT Sample the flavours of medieval Florence, during an evening of good food and music at a distinctive historic venue. (Subject to availability).

    • + JEWELS OF THE RENAISSANCE A guided tour of the Accademia allows us to appreciate the most famous and beautiful sculpture in Italy, Michelangelo's David, the symbol of Renaissance Man. Nothing can match the experience of meeting this masterpiece in person.

    • + LUNCH OR DINNER WINE AND MUSIC IN THE TUSCAN HILLS Take a scenic drive through the beautiful Tuscan countryside to a delightful regional restaurant set among the pines and cypress trees. Here a feast of gastronomic specialities awaits, accompanied by song and music.

    • + VISIT TO SAN GIMIGNANO We drive to the nearby hilltop town of San Gimignano, the 'medieval Manhattan' of Tuscany. Surrounded by fields of sunflowers, vineyards and olive groves, this is Italy's best preserved medieval city and will give you an excellent idea of daily life in Italy during the Middles Ages.

  • MILAN

    • + TREASURES OF MILAN With a local city guide we visit some of this bustling city's most famous sights. First we enter the impressive Castello Sforza - today one of the country's most important museums, where we see the 'Pieta of Rondanini' by Michelangelo among other great works. Then we continue to the world renowned 'La Scala' opera house and museum. (Should either La Scala or the Castello be unavailable, there will be a visit to the remarkable Museum of Milan.)

  • ITALIAN LAKES

    • + DRIVE AND VISIT TO BELLAGIO Our drive along the shores of Lake Como reveals the beauty of this spot. See villages and villas galore! From the lakeside a private boat will take us to visit Bellagio, the undisputed gem of the lake. Free time to stroll and shop.
