Fly to Chiang Rai and continue by long-tailed boat along the Mekong River towards the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. Visit the Ban Mae Kampong homestay for a Be My Guest lunch, experience warm Northern Thai hospitality and learn about the community's way of life. Optionals

On every itinerary, we offer a range of optional excursions that allow you to further enhance your experience should you so choose. These are purchased when you are on your trip, via your Trafalgar Travel Director. Depending on the region visited these can be paid with cash or credit card.


A reduction of 25% of the cost of the Optional Excursions is offered to all children under the age of 16 years at the time of travel. Please Note: This discount to does not apply to North America optionals, as they are already discounted.

  • Chiang Dao

    • + Day 10 One hour elephant ride in Chiang Dao Chiang Dao, translated 'the City of Stars', is north of Chiang Mai en route to Tha Ton. Chiang Dao town center has charming old-style wooden shops flanking the highway. Chiang Dao is famous for its Elephant Camp and Elephant show. Take an elephant ride in Chiang Dao for approximately one hour through some of the lovely forest scenery and along the river. Perched high in a wooden howdah, you gain an impressive view of the forest.

  • Bangkok

    • + Day 11 VIP meet and greet with Fast Track and VIP Lounge A representative will greet you at the drop-off point/check-in counter to personally check you in. You’ll be helped with your departure tax payment, Immigration formalities, any VAT refund and any duty-free purchases, as well as being escorted to your airline departure lounge or gate at departure time. Enjoy two hours’ entry to a VIP lounge with light refreshments, including fruit and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Shower facilities and massage chairs are available, plus Wi-Fi connection, newspapers and magazines in various languages.

    • + Day 2 Jim Thompson House One of the best examples of Thai residential architecture was built by an American national. Jim Thompson’s House in Bangkok houses a collection of south-east Asian art, including Buddha images, paintings, ceramics and antique furniture. Thompson was born in Delaware in 1906 and fell in love with Thailand while working as an intelligence agent during WWII. The living areas have been preserved as they were when Thompson lived there, before his mysterious disappearance in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands while on holiday in 1967. You can pick up quality silk items, books and prints from a shop just outside. minimum of two to four people)

    • + Day 3 Dinner cruise on the Manohra Experience Bangkok at its best by cruising the historic Chao Phraya river. You’ll sail aboard the 50-year-old and beautifully restored ‘Manohra’ or ‘Manohra Moon’ rice barges, which were completely re-built for dining and cocktail cruising. Seating is set for 40 guests only to ensure an intimate experience.(minimum of two to four people)

  • Chiang Mai

    • + Day 8 Beginner cooking class in Chiang Mai Take part in a beginner’s Thai cookery course in Chiang Mai. The courses are completely hands-on, which means you’ll prepare and cook all the dishes by yourself. Teachers have an extensive knowledge of Thai ingredients and cooking methods, which they take pleasure in sharing with their students every day. A recipe book in full color contains all the recipes from the five courses, along with a photograph of each dish (each participant receives a free copy of the cooking book). Once the cooking is completed, you’ll sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labour. (minimum of two to four people)
