Destination guide: Gothenburg (Göteborg)

The city of Göteborg was founded in 1621, and is Sweden's second- largest city. Historically known as "Little London", thanks to city's obsession with all things British during the 1700s, Göteborg is today often likened to San Francisco, with its rolling hills, proximity to the sea and cosmopolitan friendliness. It is an important industrial hub, and a significant proportion of Sweden's international trade takes place via the bustling harbour.

Despite its big city credentials, Göteborg has a distinct small-town charm, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The city centre is a delightful mix of old and new architectural styles, and is easy to get around; most attractions and sights to see are within comfortable walking distance.
