Destination guide: Salzburg

From the sound of Mozart to 'The Sound Of Music', Salzburg strikes the perfect note with music lovers. You can visit Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthplace, drink Mozart liqueur and eat Mozart chocolates, and every summer the star-studded Salzburg Festival celebrates the city’s most famous son. You can wander over the Monchsberg and Nonnberg hills where parts of 'The Sound Of Music' were filmed, and visit the abbey where Julie Andrews sang and danced as Fraülein Maria.

Even if music leaves you flat, there’s still plenty to love in this historic town. It’s small enough to be walkable from end to end, and surrounded by the beautiful foothills of the Alps. The elegant cathedral in the middle of town with markets at its feet is worth a visit; other sights worth seeing include the Mirabell Gardens and the cliff-top Mönchsberg museum. In the winter, Salzburg is a gateway to the ski resorts of the south.
