New Zealand Trafalgar Blog - more than just extreme sports

New Zealand: More than just extreme sports

Mention New Zealand, and the first thought most people will probably have is 'extreme sports'. It's true that nobody does extreme sports quite like the Kiwis do: bungee jumping, sky diving, zorbing, fly by wire – the list is endless! But you certainly don't have to be an adrenaline junkie to take a tour of New Zealand, because there’s a whole lot more to this stunning country than hurling yourself off bridges, out of planes, or ...

New Zealand Splendour

"The tour, the scenery and the New Zealand people were absolutely fabulous! I would recommend to anyone who has even a passing interest in traveling there not to miss it! The tour was quite the comprehensive look at all of the major attractions NZ has to offer. The tour guide Ted and the driver Murray were very knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend if it is possible (probably not) to request being on Ted's bus. His vast knowledge (32 years in the biz) of his country kept us entertained and educated us all. I probably know more about NZ now than some New Zealanders. The tour was a great way to see the country when you have little knowledge of what is worth seeing.

I absolutely recommend doing both Islands. The 17 day tour was excellent. The 20 day tour would have been worth the extra time and money if I chose that as well. If you must choose to do only one island, I would choose the South Island. Most of the exciting scenery was there. If you opt to book the farm stay like I did, you will not be able to do any of the other optional excursions offered that day in Rotorua (including the trip to the Hobbiton movie set) The couple we stayed with were wonderful people, but I would have preferred to join my friends on the other excursion. Also, it was not possible to change once you are on the tour since you are not booked in the hotel for that night. The Maori Hangi feast and welcome ceremony was great fun and well worth doing, even if you are only doing the Southern Spectacular and you do it as an additional excursion in Queenstown. The Speights brewery tour is a great, inexpensive side excursion in Dunedin. Well worth the price of the admission, the tour and the beer at the end are each worth the $25NZ. My guide Ted was happy to arrange a bungee jump excursion for 2 ladies on the tour. This was not on the list of excursions, but easily available in Queenstown. If there is something you want to do outside the scope of the tour that fits within the schedule, they are more than happy to help you arrange it.

The only thing I can think of that was even slightly negative was the initial confusion caused by the fact that this is operated as an AAT Kings tour (owned by the same company). This was just a little confusing at the start, since there was no notation to this effect anywhere on my itinerary. Not a big deal and it was cleared up with an email to Trafalgar.

This was a great trip that I would recommend to anyone!" - Stephen, February 2013
