Optionals

On every itinerary, we offer a range of optional excursions that allow you to further enhance your experience should you so choose. These are purchased when you are on your trip, via your Trafalgar Travel Director. Depending on the region visited these can be paid with cash or credit card.

  • COPENHAGEN

    • + NORTH ZEALAND RIVIERA AND CASTLE TOUR Enjoy the quaint scenery of the conservation heritage route of the Danish Riviera, passing through ancient fishing villages and modern marinas. Then through typical countryside to see Fredensborg Palace, summer residence of the Royal family before a visit to the magnificent 17th century Frederiksborg Castle. Here we will see the State Apartments and the Coronation Chapel.

    • + DANISH TRADITIONS AND TIVOLI This evening we visit the fairy-tale village of Dragor with its thatched cottages and pretty working harbour. We wander by tiny houses, learn a little of the history and enjoy a taste of traditional Danish specialities. Then to the magic of twinkling lights at Copenhagen's most famous attraction, Tivoli Gardens.

  • BERGEN

    • + CITY INSIGHTS First we head out along the fjord to visit Grieg's home, which was the inspiration for many of his masterworks. We enjoy a guided tour of the composer's villa. Then a tour or Bergen including a walk through the historical lanes of the Hanseatic town, and finally a trip up the hillside in the funicular railway for extensive views of the city.

    • + WAR AND TRANQUILITY Drive through delightful skerries to the lost village of Televag, destroyed when the Gestapo discovered the role the villagers played in the resistance. Visit the museum and then on to a traditional old Norwegian fishing village for coffee and local pancakes. (On certain departures this excursion will also include a guided visit of Fjell Fortress, a Nazi command bunker deep inside the mountain, with kitchens, a medical centre, saunas and dormitories. EURO 46.00)

  • SOGNEFJORD

    • + FJORDS AND MOUNTAINS Enjoy a relaxing cruise along the UNESCO listed Naeroyfjord with its towering mountains and fabulous scenery, followed by a scenic drive along the valley to Stalheim Hotel, occupied by the Germans during WWII and famous for its views.

    • + FJORDLAND FARM Visit a traditional working farm set amid the glorious scenery of the Sognefjord surrounded by craggy mountains and with views across the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Get to know a typical Scandinavian family, and something about their day to day lives. Learn a little of both the history, which dates back to Viking times and present day traditions. We also sample the local homemade delicacies.

  • GEIRANGER

    • + TROLLSTIGEN EXCURSION FULL DAY A delightful drinve to the Eagles' Road for amazing views of towering cliffs plunging down to the Geiranger Fjord. Then onward to the 'path of the trolls' - Trollstigen, considered a masterpiece of engineering. This is Norwegian rugged mountain scenery at its finest.

    • + SUMMER MOUNTAIN FARM Visit a traditional working mountain farm set amidst glorious alpine pastures and surrounded by craggy mountains. Learn a little of the history which dates back beyond the Viking times. See the traditional method of cheese making and then taste the goats cheese and delicious caramels which are produced here.

    • + FJORD AND DALSNIBBA We begin with views of the fjord and our hotel from the famous hairpin bends along the Dalsnibba Pass. Then we sail down Norway's most famous fjord, the UNESCO listed Geiranger Fjord, viewing tiny farms, the Bridal Veil and Seven Sisters waterfalls along the way.

  • LILLEHAMMER

    • + TREASURES OF LILLEHAMMER A guided visit to the charming folklore museum of Maihaugen on the hills above the Olympic Town. Then a visit to the Olympic Arena, and a ride in the chairlift (weather permitting) to the top of the ski-slope giving wonderful panoramic views over the town and Gudbrandsdalen.

  • OSLO

    • + VIKINGS AND EXPLORERS With our local guide we visit the three original Viking longships and their treasures. The Oseberg ship was last used a a burial ship for a woman of high rank. See the textiles, sledges and household utensils saved for the afterlife. Then the stunning Fram Museum for the story of this Polar ship and one of the most daring expeditions in history, the race to the South Pole, illustrated with films, images and completely new exhibits.

  • STOCKHOLM

    • + STOCKHOLM DISCOVERY With our local guide enjoy the beauty of Lake Malaren as we sail in an antique steamboat through the archipelago, past country cottages and elegant homes. Then visit the royal warship 'Wasa', an ornate 17th century galleon which sank just minutes after sailing. After three centuries under the sea and now saved from the Baltic for this extraordinary story.

    • + SWEDISH ICE BAR AND OLD TOWN Enjoy a drink in a glass made of ice in the minus temperatures of the Ice-Bar, which is made completely from the frozen waters of the river Torne in Sweden. An arctic experience! Then we take a walk in the fairy-tale Gamla Stan - little changed since the 16th and 17th centuries, where beauty and history meet.

    • + PANORAMIC TOWER AND DINNER A visit to the viewing platform of the Kaknas Tower, Sweden's highest building, will give you the very best views over the city and its archipelago. Then enjoy the special cuisine of a popular local restaurant with a drink included.
