On every itinerary, we offer a range of optional excursions that allow you to further enhance your experience should you so choose. These are purchased when you are on your trip, via your Trafalgar Travel Director. Depending on the region visited these can be paid with cash or credit card.

  • Kyoto

    • + DAY 8: GION CORNER Take in seven kinds of performing arts, including the famous kyo-mai dance, performed by maiko dancers. In Yasaka Hall, you’ll also witness the art of arrangements made from flowers and other materials; the traditional ‘ryurei’ style of the tea ceremony; a performance using an ancient Japanese six-stringed zither, played with ivory plectrums worn on the fingers; a maigaku performance accompanied by dance and gagaku music (indigenous Japanese music); a kyogen theatre performance that portrays life as it was as a comedy; and traditional puppet theatre, which was put on UNESCO’S list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Please note: performances occur twice daily at 18:00 and 19:00 (except from December till the second week of March, when only Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are open, and on 16 July, 16 August, and 29 December through to 3 January).

  • Tokyo

    • + DAY 2: SUMO TOURNAMENT Sumo is a popular Japanese sport with a written history spanning more than a thousand years. Each Rikishi (sumo wrestler) is matched up with a new opponent every day, with the hope of being awarded the Emperor's Cup. Rikishis belong to teams and live and train in a Sumobeya, and their life is completely dedicated to the sport. Please note: tournaments occur on the second and third weeks of January, May and September only. The main match of the day occurs at 16:00 and 18:00. Advance booking is essential.

  • Kenroku-en

    • + DAY 7: TEA CEREMONY AT KENROKUEN GARDEN See how the Japanese make tea during a tea ceremony at Gyokusen-en, near Kenrokuen Garden. Enjoy trying the traditional tea – which is a bitter maccha green tea, made of powdered leaves – and some Japanese sweets.

  • Hakone

    • + DAY 3: HAKONE ROPEWAY Enjoy magnificent panoramas all the way along the Hakone Ropeway and a view of Mount Fuji, if the weather allows. The Hakone Ropeway is 4,035 metres long – the distance between Sounzan and Togendai. It's the longest ropeway in Japan and the second longest in the world, behind Kriens Bahn in Switzerland. Take the ropeway between Togendai and Owakudani stations for a 16-minute ride.
