Facts About Siena

Local specialties include crostini di milza (slices of toasted crusty bread with a sauce made of spleen - much nicer than it sounds!), zuppa di fagioli (bean soup) and a vast range of delicious charcuterie made from the rare local breed pig, the Cinta Senese. If you have a sweet tooth, try the Panforte - a dense cake with almonds, candied fruit and honey, that has been produced in the city since the middle ages - or the delicate Ricciarelli almond biscuits. And don't forget the vino - Montepulciano and Montalcino in the province of Siena produce some of best, and best renowned, Italian wines.
