Holiday in Madrid – Your guide to Madrid, Spain

What to see in Madrid?

  1. Gran Via: Madrid’s Gran Via or ‘Great Road’ originally began as an ironic name used by newspapers to denote the lack of progress on the road’s construction. This is because the Gran Via was first planned in the mid-19th Century, approved in 1904 and completed only in 1929. Renowned for its impressive architecture, it’s the best place for entertainment and shopping in Madrid.
  2. Plaza de Espana: Just off the Gran Via, this plaza is the perfect place to relax on a sunny day as you watch Madrid life go by and enjoy the monument to writer and poet Miguel de Cervantes.
  3. Palacio Real: The official residence of the Spanish Royal Family for centuries, the Palacio Real is renowned for its collection of classic Spanish art.
  4. Prado Museum: The largest art gallery in the world – storing over 7,800 paintings but only showcasing 900 due to a lack of space, the museum boasts an extensive collection of both old and modern masterpieces.
  5. La Puerto del Sol: Ever since the 17th Century, this iconic plaza has been a busy and significant place to meet; the Post Office used to attract flocks of people as they awaited news to arrive from all over Spain.
