Mystery, myths and spirituality

The mysteries and myths of Asia have fascinated Europeans for centuries. The spiritual continent is full of ancient wonders, such as the enormous Buddhas of Thailand and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

China

Get ready for an incredible journey back in time. China is one of the world’s oldest civilisations, with 5,000 years of history and culture under its belt. Its great sights are famous the world over and include the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Terracotta Warriors.

But what’s more challenging is getting to the heart of what everyday life is like in this indomitable nation. That’s why we give you the chance to take a ride through the capital’s ancient alleyways to the home of a Chinese family. They’ll welcome you in for a traditional lunch, with the chance to get an insight into the nation’s artistry through cookery, calligraphy and tai chi classes.

You’ll also visit the village of Shirakawa-gō, where the traditional homes are distinguished by their striking ‘prayer-hands’ style thatched roofs. Learn how to make sushi in Tokyo and wasabi in Matsumoto. And at a Ryokan in Kyoto, join a family for a traditional multi-course kaiseki dinner, over which you’ll learn about their customs and traditions.

And we’ll show you the down-to-earth charm of Chiang Mai, where you can watch artisans at work and learn to make Thai dishes with a local chef. We’ll also take you to the village of Ban Mae Kampong, where you’ll meet the chief, visit its school and join a family for a homecooked lunch.
