Lisbon

Europe's second oldest capital city was perfectly placed as a gateway for trade and exploration. Phoenicians, Romans, Celts and Moors were beguiled by its beautiful waterfront, ensuring that the city absorbed an eclectic mix of architectural styles and cultural characteristics. The spirit of adventure is best represented by the Discoveries Monument on the Tagus River's north bank. Built in 1960, this striking stone structure portrays explorers Magellan, Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator, spanning the imposing bow of a ship. Walk the length of 25 de Abril Bridge, which straddles the Tagus and resembles San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Enter the Alfama district and step into the past, as you walk its narrow lanes and happen across petite squares, quaint houses and churches marked out in pristine white and titian. And further along the coast, admire the exquisite architecture of the Monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belém, dating back to 1502.

Oporto

The country’s second largest city is built on the banks of the Douro river estuary in Portugal's northwest. Dom Luís Bridge, an unusual arched metal construction, links the city to neighbouring Vila Nova de Gaia. Here, like in Oporto, lies a long history of port winemaking. We’ll take you down the steps of a venerable port-making establishment into the cool cellar below, where wood-aged port ferments in oak caskets. Sample the rich flavours and listen as an expert explains to you the history and processes that produce this singular wine.

Fatima and the Algarve

The south-western point of Portugal, the Algarve, is a glittering gem in Europe's crown. Alight at Vilamoura, where beguiling waves lap the fine, golden sand of sun-kissed beaches. And make the short trip to Sagres, where you’ll see some of the Algarve's most dramatic scenery as you look across Baleeira Beach. Before reaching the Algarve, it would be remiss not to stop at Fatima, where apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary appeared to children in 1917. Several more visitations are said to have occurred, and the site is now an important Catholic shrine to the Virgin Mary.
