2. Frankfurt – Excursion Worms and Mainz

Today begin your discovery of the life of Martin Luther with a full day excursion to Worms and Mainz. It was here that private conferences were held to determine Luther's fate after he had published his 95 Theses in 1517. Martin Luther had challenged the entire Roman Catholic establishment by his refusal to recant the great doctrines of Protestantism. The Emperor presented the final draft of the Edict of Worms on 25 May 1521 declaring Luther an outlaw, banning his literature, and requiring his arrest. It was also in Worms that William Tyndale completed the printing of his English version of the New Testament in 1525 which he had begun in Cologne. After visiting St. Peter's Church and the symbolic Martin Luther Memorial near the town square travel to Mainz. View the Gutenberg Monument commemorating the German printing of the Bible before returning back to your hotel in Frankfurt.

This morning travel to Erfurt, another city closely linked to Martin Luther. Erfurt is the capital of the German state Thuringia and is known as the Rome of Thuringia because of its many churches. Its medieval city center is one of the largest and best preserved in Germany. In his early years, Martin Luther attended the University of Erfurt which is one of the three oldest universities in Germany. After he had taken a vow to become a monk, he entered the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt and lived there as a monk for 6 years. In 1507, Luther was ordained a priest in Erfurt Cathedral. In total Martin Luther lived and worked in Erfurt from 1501 to 1511. The city also has connections with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Sebastian Bach, Napoleon Bonaparte, Tzar Alexander, and Goethe.

Visit the museum which was Martin Luther's house and today is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It contains a permanent exhibition on Luther's life and work, focusing on his early years in the town. Today is devoted to Wittenberg. Luther nailed his ninety-five Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg on 31 October 1517. Inside the church, visit the graves of Martin Luther and Phillip Melanchthon. You will also view Luther's house. The reformer lived here from 1508 and was joined by his wife Katharina in 1525. She gave him a gate as a present for his 57th birthday which you can still see today and which shows the Luther rose which is the coat of arms of the reformer.
