Your Itinerary

1. Arrive Bangkok (4 Nights)

Welcome to Bangkok. Transfer to your centrally located riverside hotel and relax before meeting your Travel Director and fellow guests for a Welcome Reception drink with local appetisers.

2. Bangkok Sightseeing - Free Time

For the early risers, start your day with a visit to Lumpini Park to join the locals and learn the basic principles of T'ai Chi, a Cultural Insight. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely start to the day before joining your fellow travellers on your city tour starting with a visit to Bangkok's most well-known fruit and flower market, Pak Klong Talad. Next visit the Grand Palace, which served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th to the mid 20th century. The most famous building in the palace grounds is Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Enjoy some free time this afternoon and evening to relax or take part in an Optional Experience.

3. Bangkok Sightseeing

Make an early start this morning to visit the famous floating fruit and vegetable market at Damnoen Saduak and arrive there before the crowds. The colourfully clad merchants at this lively market paddle along the congested canals in sturdy canoes laden with fresh fruit and vegetables to sell to shoppers on the banks. En route make a short stop at a coconut palm sugar plantation and discover how the farmer extracts the sap from the palm trees to eventually be turned into sugar, a Cultural Insight. Returning to Bangkok visit Wat Pho, Bangkok's oldest temple, which features the largest reclining Buddha in Thailand. Wat Pho is also famous for Thailand's first University, and is a centre for traditional Thai massage. Enjoy a Thai massage, a Cultural Insight, in the grounds of the temple. Later take a ferry across the Chao Phraya river to Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and its impressive ceramic covered Pagoda.

4. Bangkok – Kanchanaburi – Bangkok

Travel to Kanchanaburi for a visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum; a facility dedicated to presenting the history of the famous railway line built during the Second World War by the Imperial Japanese army using Allied prisoners of war alongside Asian labourers. Visit the War Cemetery, the final resting place for over 6,000 Allied prisoners, before reaching the world famous Bridge over the River Kwai. After lunch at a local restaurant, board the local train, a Cultural Insight, for a thrilling ride across wooden viaducts offering fantastic scenery along the Kwai River. Later travel back to Bangkok, where the evening is yours to relax.

5. Bangkok – Chiang Rai - Golden Triangle (2 Nights)

After breakfast at your hotel head to the airport for your flight to Chiang Rai. On arrival visit an Ahka village to see the local people wearing their bright colourful headdresses. Continue to Doi Tung, a pilgrimage site for Thai, Shan and Chinese Buddhists and once a cultivating site for opium, for a visit to the Royal Development Project. The late Princess Mother of Thailand initiated this project to help the struggling local people to educate and empower themselves to be economically self-reliant. Continue to your hotel in the Golden Triangle for dinner and your overnight stay.

6. Golden Triangle and Laos

Today drive to Chiang Saen, the former capital of the first Thai Lanna Kingdom. Transfer to a boat and cruise along the Mekong River towards the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. Stop in Laos and visit the Don Sao Island Markets, which have an abundance of local handicrafts. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Hall of Opium, situated in the heart of the Golden Triangle, providing an excellent Cultural Insight into the opium trade so prevalent in this area in the past century. Later return to your hotel in the Golden Triangle for an evening at leisure.

7. Golden Triangle - Chiang Mai (3 Nights)

Depart early this morning with a brief stop at the unique white temple of Wat Rong Khun. Proceed to Chiang Mai, which has a rich cultural and agricultural heritage, and is famous for the production of high-quality handicrafts. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the handicraft villages in Sankamphaeng before continuing to Wat Doi Suthep. The temple is located near the top of Doi Suthep (Mt. Suthep) and was built as a Buddhist monastery in 1383. This evening perhaps take part in an Optional Experience or simply relax at your hotel.

8. Chiang Mai - Ban Mae Kampong

Today depart in small vehicles to visit a local school before continuing on to Ban Mae Kampong village, which is 1,300 metres above sea level. On arrival meet the village chief, or a member of his family, who will talk about the culture and way of life on these remote settlements before joining the family for a Be My Guest lunch. After lunch, take a village tour to observe the making of local hats, bamboo furniture, handicrafts, herbal products and the process of fermenting old tea leaves, a Cultural Insight. See the Mae Kampong temple and waterfall before transferring back to Chiang Mai for a free evening.

9. Chiang Mai Free Time

Enjoy a day at leisure or choose to join an Optional Experience. This evening enjoy a delightful Farewell Dinner with your fellow companions and Travel Director at a local restaurant.

10. Arrive Siem Reap (3 Nights)

Transfer to the airport for the short flight to Bangkok and onward to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Have some free time this afternoon to relax and enjoy the hotel's facilities.

11. Angkor Wat & Siem Reap Sightseeing

This morning, visit Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important religious monuments in the world, with a renowned Khmer Scholar Local Specialist. Take a stroll through the elaborate carved hallways of Angkor Wat as the Khmer Empire is brought to life through the scholar's explanations of the various stories contained in each of the bas reliefs and murals. Next head to Banteay Srei temple which is one of Angkor's most significant structures. Made of red sand-stone, its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings and it is in an amazing state of preservation. Make a stop for lunch at a local Khmer restaurant before taking a guided walk around the fascinating corners of the Old Town of Siem Reap. Visit Artisans d'Angkor, for a Cultural Insight into the training school and shop which creates job opportunities for young people living in rural areas, while at the same time reviving traditional Khmer craftsmanship. Cross picturesque Siem Reap River to Wat Damnak, a living temple, and receive a special blessing from one of the monks, which includes the tying of a blessed string around the wrist. Walk back across the Pedestrian Bridge to the Old Market and be lead through the maze of undercover stalls selling fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and household goods as well as an array of local handicrafts and souvenirs. In the evening perhaps take an Optional Experience sunset cruise on Tonle Sap Lake to see Siem Reap's famous floating village and to observe the lifestyle of the people living on the lake.

12. Angkor Sightseeing and Free Time

Start the day with a visit to two other UNESCO listed sites - Angkor Thom the ancient royal city of the Khmer Empire and its centrepiece, the Bayon Temple. Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants, which served as a platform from where the King could welcome back his victorious army. Next head to the picturesque temple of Ta Prohm which was used as the location for the film ‘Tomb Raider'. The magnificent tree roots have merged with the temple remains over the years, giving the feeling of a forgotten city. Return to Siem Reap and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. This evening consider completing your trip in style with an Optional Experience Farewell Dinner accompanied by traditional Apsara Dancing.

    Service rating : The service was very good.Product : Trip was very interesting but was a little disappointed that the elephants were taken out of the trip and we were not informed that this had happened.

    Service rating : The Opening Cocktail party was a big help in making our group of 20 (good size) into a family. But in Cambodia Trafalgar made no effort to acquaint the two merging groups to cohere. Trafalgar really provided only one and one half days of tours in the time we were in Siem Reap.
