Classical Athens was a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, and is widely seen as the cradle of Western Civilisation and the birthplace of democracy. One of the world's oldest cities, discover the rich heritage of Athens during your morning sightseeing tour with your Local Specialist. Explore the Acropolis and view the Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. Marvel at the Agora, the Royal Palace and the Temple of Zeus. Enjoy an included visit to the Acropolis Museum containing remarkable antiquities. See Hadrian's Arch, built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, and the stadium where the first modern Olympics took place in 1896. Spend the rest of the day as you wish. Take a relaxing trip down to the southernmost tip of Mainland Greece to see the fifth century B.C Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. See if you can spot where Byron carved his initials on one of the temple’s sixteen columns. Marvel at the sheer rugged beauty of the coastline and the ancient temple perched above a 197-foot drop down to the Aegean Sea below. Stand above the site of the world’s first lighthouse, overlooking an area steeped in classical Greek history, ever since the tragic King Aegeas threw himself from the rocky precipice into the sea below, thereby giving his name to the Aegean Sea.

The area steeped in Classical Greek history is where King Aegeas threw himself from the rocky precipice, a 197 ft drop in to the sea below, thereby lending his name to the Aegean Sea. A unique opportunity to view of the temple high above the Aegean Sea! Do not forget your cameras to capture the moment. Later visit the ancient theatre and view the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the God of Medicine in Epidaurus with your Local Specialist. Meet your Local Specialist and spend the morning visiting the ancient Olympic site and museum and the Temples of Zeus and Hera − the wife of Zeus and one of the most important deities in Greek mythology. Driving north to Patras, you cross the Gulf of Corinth to mainland Greece before continuing to Delphi.

Tour Delphi on the slopes of Mount Parnassos with your Local Specialist and see the site of the most important oracle in the classical world. Walk the Sacred Way to the Temple of Apollo dating from the 4th century. It was here that every four years athletes competed in the Pythian Games, dedicated to Apollo and the arts. A picturesque early afternoon drive brings you to Thermopylae, famous for the heroic defence by Leonidas and his brave Spartans against the invading Persians. After seeing the memorial, cross the fertile Thessaly region, the 'bread basket of Greece' and travel over the Pourmaraki Pass towards Kalambaka.

Drive to Meteora, one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece. Arrive at the Turkish resort of Kusadasi.  You will have the chance to visit ancient Ephesus, one of the seven churches of the Roman province of Asia, or shop in the local markets and savour the atmosphere. After lunch visit the verdant island of Samos which was fertile ground for some of the great minds of ancient Greece, including Aesop, Epicurus and Pythagoras.

Ancient Ephesus through the ages - Hellenistic and Roman

This morning, the wonderful site of Ancient Ephesus awaits. Walk the streets visited by so many famous historical figures including Cleopatra. The local specialist brings history alive as we begin our visit at the top of Ephesus, passing by the Agora, Odeon, the original marble-paved Street of Kouretes, Trajan’s Fountain, Public Latrines, Hadrian’s Temple, culminating with the magnificent Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, which accommodated 24,000 spectators.Our optional experience gives us an opportunity for local shopping such as carpets, jewelry, leather and other souvenirs famous in Turkey. Return to the town and port of Kusadasi, take the opportunity to bargain in the covered bazaar.

Pythagoras island and its diverse beauty

Samos the land of Pythagoras, Epicurus, Aristarchus and possibly Aesop, has fertile and is renowned for its Muscat variety of wine. Our drive begins from Vathy where you arrive at the Samos Wine Museum. Inaugurated in the summer of 2005, both its exhibits and impressive representations will guide you through the steps taken to produce the fine, aromatic, awarded wine. Traveling south, we come to the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani where it is said the Cave of Pythagoras was, from here; the great mathematician operated his philosophical school. Conclude the excursion in the town of Pythagoreio, the third largest village of Samos, a vivid and beautifully maintained place, you will have enough time for exploration, walks and shopping.

Depart Ermopouli, the capital of the Cyclades and a UNESCO World Heritage site, to Anastasi Church. This lovely domed church offers a breathtaking view of Tinos and Mykonos before we drive through the beach village’s home to many beautiful bays and ornate traditional mansions. Visit the Monastery of Agia Varvara then stop and sample a traditional “loukoumi” or Turkish delight at the factory where it’s made. Visit the Holy Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin to see El Greco’s The Dormition of the Virgin, painted before 1567, see the first high school of modern Greece, see the neoclassical mansions, Apollon Theater, the first opera house in Greece, a copy of La Scala in Milan, Museum of Cycladic Art and the Archeological Museum. Izmir, the wonderful vibrant Turkish city is home to more than three million people and Turkey’s third-largest city. It presents itself as a modern metropolis, but as we tour Izmir its magnificent ancient past comes alive. The remains of the ancient agora, built by Marcus Aurelius in 178 BC, lie at the heart of the city. Our local specialist will also show you the only two-story agora yet discovered – its first floor was dedicated to trade, manufacturing and storage, its second to civic meetings and retailing. Many of the artifacts recovered from this remarkable site are on display at Izmir’s New Archeological Museum, with galleries arranged so they to send you on an evocative journey through history.
