Geneva

Home of the United Nations, Geneva is situated between the Jura Mountains to the north and the Alpine Peaks to the West. Sometimes you’ll walk out of a café or shop and they’ll be in the distance. It really does take your breath away.

As for the town itself, it is packed with picturesque cafes, squares and meandering streets in the old town, otherwise known as the Vielle Ville. Highlights include the Flower Clock, a working horticultural timepiece that sits on a knoll, and of course Lake Geneva, with its famous Jet d'Eau, which shoots water more than 450 feet into the sky.

Lugano

In the south of the country and less than eight miles from the Italian border lies Lugano, a lakeside city surrounded by wisteria, lemon trees and camellias.

There you’ll join us at a vineyard at the summit of the Monteggio Hill, where you’ll be greeted by Massimo and Joelle, who’ll invite you to enjoy a home-cooked Mediterranean meal with a Swiss-German twist. Not to mention some of their farm-produced wine.

Zurich

It might live up to its reputation as a high-powered banking capital, but there’s more to Zurich than its thriving financial centre. For instance, its central business district is one of the most striking in the world – with architecture that wouldn’t look out of place in a fairytale book.

Beyond the bustle of the stock exchange lies a serene lake, of which the city is centred around. Dotted along it you’ll find characterful bars, cafes and restaurants. Zurich is also home to important works of art, which are split across more than 100 galleries and include pieces by Diego.

Come with us and you’ll discover the beauty of this underrated city, which affords a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Your Travel Director will point out its hidden treasures, too, like the Fraumünster and Grossmünster churches, loved for their stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.

Scenic journeys

One of the best ways to see the country’s unique scenery is to board the Glacier Express. During the eight-hour journey, you’ll pass through virgin Alpine countryside, with dramatic sheer rock faces and mountain streams.

The Bernina Express is no less impressive, and takes you across the Alps, past immense glaciers towards rich green forests.

Christmas in Switzerland

Snow-topped peaks and fairytale alpine villages are synonymous with Switzerland, but during Christmas it becomes a true winter wonderland. While many visitors head to Switzerland to ski and snowboard in this season, it’s also an ideal time to partake in Swiss specialities and traditions.

It’s almost always snowy in Switzerland in December – so fondue is a popular winter warmer shared with friends and family, as is mulled wine. The country’s close proximity to Germany, France and Italy means festive celebrations vary from region to region, though Christmas markets have always been a strong tradition.

The Franziskanerplatz market in the Old Town of Lucerne is one of the largest, and if you join our Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany and Switzerland tour you’ll experience its magic.
