Take note however that in the Catalan region of Spain, the locals have a tendency to pronounce their &#8216;c&#8217; as a &#8216;thee&#8217;. So, place your tongue on the tip of your top incisors and practice \u201cgra-thee-as\u201d to say thank you. In Spanish, \u201cto the left\u201d is <em>\u201ca la izquierda\u201d, <\/em>while \u201cto the right\u201d is \u201c<em>a la derecha\u201d. <\/em>The latter is not to be confused with the word <em>\u201cderecho\u201d<\/em>, which means straight ahead. One of the best Spanish phrases for travel is \u201cwhat would you recommend?\u201d You may have no idea what&#8217;s about to arrive on your table, but it&#8217;s guaranteed to be delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-puede-ayudarme\">11. <strong><em>\u00bfPuede ayudarme? <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the useful Spanish phrases to be kept front of mind at all times is this basic Spanish phrase, which means \u201ccan you help me?\u201d. You can also say \u201cI need help\u201d, (<em>necesito ayuda). <\/em> <em>Puede<\/em> is a really useful Spanish word to remember, it just means &#8216;can you&#8217;. To make it about yourself, change the e for an o to make <em>puedo. <\/em>You can use this for things like <em>Puedo reservar una mesa <\/em>(can I reserve a table) and other slightly more advanced conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-como\"><strong>12. <em>C\u00f3mo<\/em><\/strong>&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>C\u00f3mo<\/em> (with the accent) is one of the key Spanish question words, and means different things in different contexts. A good rule of thumb is to think of it as meaning &#8216;how&#8217;.<em> C\u00f3mo te llamas<\/em> is used when asking someone their name, literally meaning &#8220;How are you called?&#8221; (informal tense), and <em>c\u00f3mo est\u00e1s<\/em> means &#8220;how are you?&#8221;. Yes, <em>lo siento<\/em> (I&#8217;m sorry) to make things more confusing, but there are other ways to say &#8216;How are you?&#8217; than just <em>\u00bfQue tal?<\/em> We do the same in English too, though. You can combine that with a <em>lo siento<\/em>. This way, you&#8217;re sure to avoid awkward silences when faced with a conversation you can&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-14-perdon\">14. <em>Perd\u00f3n <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For minor mistakes, it&#8217;s best to say &#8220;Pardon me&#8221;, for instances when you&#8217;ve bumped into someone in the street, or accidentally jumped someone in the queue.
