The word rolls off the tongue almost as deliciously as it tastes. Perfect for every mood \u2013 from a cosy lunch for one to a lively meal out \u2013 spaghetti infatuates foodies worldwide. And as if you needed one, National Spaghetti Day (4 January annually) presents the perfect excuse to gorge on these long, round-shaped noodle strands of Sicilian origin. It rapidly became popular in Italy; and after spaghetti factories appeared in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, its popularity skyrocketed overseas. Especially in the US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fun fact: in the year 2000, over 1.3 million pounds of spaghetti were sold in American grocery stores&#8230; enough strands to circle the Earth nine times!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, millions make this wonderfully versatile food a part of their lives. The locals keep it light. &#8216;Aglio olio\u2019 (spaghetti with red chilli, garlic and oil) is a simple masterpiece and a big favourite. Don&#8217;t drown your spaghetti in buckets of sauce or cheese. Keep the portion size moderate rather than gigantic enough to make you fall asleep (we&#8217;ve all been there). Note that the primi (pasta) dish in Italy is not eaten as a one course meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top tips: If making at home, remember to always cook \u2018al dente\u2019 (meaning \u2018to the tooth\u2019 in Italian). This means a slightly chewy texture, not soft or mushy. And many locals believe you should make your pasta water as salty as the sea.
