Roos, shrimps, barbies and brumbies:\u00a0 those Aussies sure know a thing or two about slang.\u00a0 Australian English is a veritable minefield of weird and wonderful words and sayings, from the well known (\u201cg’day\u201d) to the obscure (\u201chooroo\u201d \u2013 goodbye) and from the sublime (\u201cmystery bag\u201d \u2013 sausage) to the ridiculous (\u201ccome the raw prawn\u201d \u2013 to be disagreeable).\u00a0 But humorous though it may be, the richness of Aussie slang is testament to a fascinating history and the meeting of two very different cultures.<\/p>\n

Many expressions used in Australia today derive from the original western convict settlers banished there during the 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> centuries.\u00a0 It’s likely that the Cockney convicts sent to live in Australia were responsible for the traces of rhyming slang in Aussie slang, such as \u201cCaptain Cook\u201d, meaning \u201clook\u201d.\u00a0 Other expressions are of unknown origin, such as \u201cfair dinkum\u201d (meaning \u201ctrue\u201d), while others, often terms referring to local wildlife, are from the native Aboriginal languages.\u00a0 Impressively, there were a whopping 250 different recognized languages in Australia at the time westerners arrived \u2013 the result of numerous Aboriginal tribes each having their own dialect.\u00a0 Most of these languages have now died out, except in the occasional traces left in Aussie slang.<\/p>\n

Traditional songs have kept alive an extensive vocabulary of Aussie outback slang, even though some of it is no longer in everyday use.\u00a0 Some terms even derive from the 19th<\/sup> century goldrushes \u2013 such as \u201cfossick\u201d, meaning to rummage about \u2013 and from the First World War, when the use of slang served to foster a sense of national identity amongst troops posted far from home.\u00a0 These days, Aussie slang delights tourists, for whom dictionaries explaining its eclectic phrases make ideal souvenirs of memorable outback adventures.<\/p>\n
