Last Swinhoe turtle female appears<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2022\/04\/the_zoologist_barista_172065896_3871071792973495_3802503990734513772_n.jpg\" alt=\"endangered Swinhoe turtle\" class=\"wp-image-857864\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts had almost abandoned hope of conserving Swinhoe softshell turtles. Until a stunning 130kg female was spotted in Dong Mo Lake, Vietnam. Also known as \u2018Yangtze giant softshell turtle\u2019 or \u2018Hoan Kiem turtle\u2019, conservationists are striving to find her a mate to keep this species alive. There is one known male living in China\u2019s Suzhou Zoo; and the search is ongoing to haul this majestic turtle species back from the brink of extinction. The future is looking solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Extinct\u2019 Australian rodent rears its head<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2022\/04\/coupleofbushbattlers_31338672_751782018361252_911921075628015616_n-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Australia's Shark Bay Mouse\" class=\"wp-image-857860\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Australian Gould\u2019s Field Mouse had been extinct since 1857 when European settlers arrived. Or so experts thought! Remarkably, genetic analysis revealed it lives on today under a different name \u2013 the &#8216;djoongari&#8217; or \u2018Shark Bay Mouse\u2019 (found on three islands in Western Australia\u2019s Shark Bay). There had been no sign of \u2018Critically Endangered\u2019 Diyarbakir Loach fish for over 50 years. When it suddenly it appeared in the Batman River Dam in Southeastern Turkey. It\u2019s believed the dam construction in 1986 sliced their habitat in two, making it difficult for them to thrive. During 2021\u2019s UN climate change conference (<a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/glasgow-leaders-declaration-on-forests-and-land-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COP26<\/a>), 141 countries (representing over 85% of the world&#8217;s forests) pledged to combine efforts to \u2018Conserve forests and other terrestrial ecosystems and accelerate their restoration\u2019 by 2030. This marks a big wildlife win. Forest and land use finally is getting the spotlight it deserves. Incredibly, recent studies show that two females gave birth without breeding \u2013 (known among scientists as \u2018parthenogenesis\u2019) and non-scientists as \u2018virgin birth\u2019. Odd cases of asexual reproduction in sexually reproducing species happens cells in a female\u2019s egg behave like sperm and fuse with the egg. Oliver Ryder, director of conservation genetics at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, says: \u2018Why did this happen? We just don\u2019t know&#8230; Will it happen again? I rather believe so.\u201d And we love the mystery!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Largest ever rhinos translocation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2022\/04\/david-clode-nGrcKcgiXfo-unsplash-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"white rhinos\" class=\"wp-image-857866\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>30 white rhinos were moved from Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve (South Africa) to Akagera National Park (Rwanda) to create a &#8216;breeding stronghold&#8217; and help spread the white rhino species north.
