You might recognise it from films like Stagecoach, Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Plus the desert running scene in Forrest Gump (starring Tom Hanks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sediments formed into a lowly basin thanks to 50 million years\u2019 worth of erosion on mountains. Then, further erosion stripped away the softer materials and pushed what remained upwards due to pressure from below the earth\u2019s surface. The result is a masterpiece of mother nature and one of the most photographed sites on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hidden between the rocks, shrubs and arrow-straight roads, rock engravings, hogan mud huts and fossils, local Navajo have stories to tell&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of indigenous life in Navajo Tribal Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B8PkHgWI359\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How did a small settlement in northwest New Mexico (in 900 AD) evolve into a 71,000km nation with over 250,000 people and the most sophisticated indigenous Indian government ever seen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start: from 900 to 1525 AD, Navajo Indians traded flint and moccasins with Anasazi and Pueblo peoples across the southwest. And thanks to their smooth sales skills, they expanded into northeast Arizona and southeast Utah in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Battling Spanish colonizers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ChFcI6MrGGD\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like all indigenous Americans, their land is sacred. So when Spanish colonizers threatened their home, many Navajo rallied for their indigenous friends and fought in <a href=\"https:\/\/indianpueblo.org\/pueblo-revolt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Pueblo Revolt of 1690<\/a>: the most successful indigenous uprising against colonial intruders. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The scorched earth war (1863)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BzEevLNlN9p\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Navajos will never forget 1863. For refusing to accept confinement, Colonel Christopher \u201cKit\u201d Carson launched a brutal scorched earth war on &nbsp;Navajo lands. Villages were destroyed; crops were burnt; livestock was slaughtered. Families were broken as 10,000 Navajo were forced to walk 300 miles to New Mexico to be confined at the Bosque Redondo Reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Relief at last &#8211; The Navajo Treaty (1868)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2022\/08\/hopirelief_117327446_181680073393102_2995700459441791671_n-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"indigenous Americans in Navajo\" class=\"wp-image-870530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hopirelief_117327446_181680073393102_2995700459441791671_n-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hopirelief_117327446_181680073393102_2995700459441791671_n-330x330.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/real-word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hopirelief_117327446_181680073393102_2995700459441791671_n.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After yearning their homeland every minute, the Navajo people negotiated a return home. They signed a treaty with the US government in 1868: agreeing to cease war against the United States and, in return, let U.S. officials live within their lands and manage the construction of railroads. The government provided farming equipment and seeds, 15,000 sheep and goats, and 500 cattle. Plus laid out other rules and regulations. For example: that each person owns 160 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a little different from before, the Navajo were finally home \u2013 with many in Navajo Tribal Park. And just a few years later in 1884, they added Utah to their territory. Momentum was building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Navajo Code Talkers (1942)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ChQgAhjDLIe\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Navajo were part of a brilliant success story from World War II. When their influx of land oil sources enticed the US government (looking to cash in), they formed a tribal government in 1923. This developed into the most sophisticated indigenous American government in existence by 1991 \u2013 with executive, legislative and judicial systems. And to stay true to their culture, everyone spoke Navajo language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the cherry on top&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/today-in-history\/june-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Native Americans were granted citizenship in 1924<\/a>.
