Despite officially surpassing Germany\u2019s Ulm Minster in height, <em>La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/em> is still reaching for the stars with its record-breaking spire yet to be completed. It sits on the top of the tower, putting the church just 1.38 metres (4.5 feet) higher than the German Gothic Lutheran cathedral. Well, <em>almost.<\/em> Work on the mega church began in 1882, and while Gaud\u00ed knew he\u2019d never see it completed, his vision continues to guide today\u2019s architects and artisans who carry out his master vision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basilica\u2019s builders now aim to complete the main structure by 2026, marking the centenary of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s death. Born in 1852 in Reus, Spain, Gaud\u00ed became the leading voice of Catalan Modernisme, blending Gothic tradition with organic, almost dreamlike forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to try and imagine how forward-thinking his work was in the late 19th-century, designing architecture that blended nature and geometry in lively forms. When you visit Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia isn\u2019t the only must-see Gaud\u00ed site. There\u2019s Park G\u00fcell, Casa Batll\u00f3, Casa Mil\u00e0, the Gaud\u00ed House Museum (where the architect lived) and the Col\u00f2nia G\u00fcell crypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His greatest and most personal masterpiece is the Sagrada Familia, a project he devoted the last 40 years of his life to. For example, the 18 towers represent key figures from the Bible \u2013 12 apostles, 4 evangelists, the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, whose central tower now crowns the skyline making this the world\u2019s tallest church.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaud\u00ed wanted the basilica to feel like a living expression of faith, where nature and divinity intertwine.
