What can a Travel Director do to help? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
“Guests come\u00a0with\u00a0an idea\u00a0of how they want to propose on vacation,\u00a0and we\u00a0work around it. I had someone on tour many years ago and,\u00a0instead of them going on a gondola ride with everyone,\u00a0I organized for the couple to have\u00a0their own\u00a0\u2013\u00a0just the two of them. I just pretended the numbers\u00a0didn’t\u00a0add up, then when I called up for everyone\u00a0to get on the boat\u00a0I\u00a0just said, ‘Oh, there’s two people left\u00a0\u2013\u00a0you go in this one,’ like it was the most normal thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We\u2019re\u00a0good at playing it cool \u2013 all\u00a0Travel\u00a0Directors are.\u00a0It’s\u00a0fun for us too, because\u00a0it’s\u00a0something a little different.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“A Travel Director always has a little budget to\u00a0help out\u00a0with a bottle of something when\u00a0it’s\u00a0done, and I typically always tell the hotels \u2013 they love to chip in for honeymoons or newly engaged couples.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any tips on what to do, or what not to do? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
“Don’t do it without having told your Travel Director you’re planning to. That has actually happened to me \u2013 someone came back and said, ‘Oh, we’re engaged.’ I was like, ‘What! Why didn’t you tell me?’ We can always help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“As for bringing the ring,\u00a0if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not comfortable putting it in your\u00a0big checked\u00a0suitcase,\u00a0you need to make sure you have space. There’s\u00a0a better opportunity of hiding it in your own suitcase,\u00a0definitely not\u00a0in a\u00a0shared carry\u2013on.\u00a0But the percentage chance of\u00a0your checked\u00a0suitcase\u00a0getting lost is around 0.001%.\u00a0On one big three-month trip, I\u00a0traveled\u00a0around with a ring for about a month in checked luggage. Trust the process!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Some people have asked if they could store the ring on the bus, as we have a safe. The drivers say no as they don’t\u00a0want to take responsibility for that, which I understand.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n “The big thing is communicating with the person who is proposing without the other partner being there \u2013 that’s typically the hard one. You have to sneak it short, quick messages throughout the day. Maybe she’s in the bathroom and he runs over to say, ‘What are we thinking?’ That’s definitely the hardest part, but it’s also what makes it fun \u2013 a little secrecy. You’re instantly on the same page. You have that little secret and you’ll work it out. I\u2019m basically saying: trust me, I’ll come to you when the time is right. I’ll give the person proposing a couple of days’ notice \u2013 especially working in Scandinavia the weather can be stunning and beautiful one day and ten minutes later it’s snowing \u2013 and it’s July. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “It depends on\u00a0the individual too. Some people want\u00a0to do propose on vacation\u00a0in a public\u00a0spot,\u00a0some want something a little\u00a0more\u00a0private. I\u00a0had one once in Paris on the last day of the tour\u00a0\u2013\u00a0he’d\u00a0been carrying the ring around the\u00a0whole day.\u00a0There’s\u00a0a place in Paris called the Wall of Love<\/a> in Montmartre. I told him, ‘Don’t do anything that day. Rent a bike and go around\u00a0here,’ and gave him a little map with a circle on it. I gave the guests free time and said, ‘Make sure you’re here at this time.’ Then I\u00a0went to the spot and\u00a0waited in the bushes, and when he popped the\u00a0question\u00a0I came out with a bottle of champagne.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Absolutely. They come back and share all the pictures. People ask, ‘Who took that?’ and they’re like, ‘Lasse organized it all.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “There was a proposal in Switzerland, on top of a mountain. The guy came to me early and just said, ‘Tell me where to do it.’ <\/p>\n\n\n\n “We kept waiting. It could have happened on a gondola in Venice,\u00a0at the Colosseum in\u00a0Rome, there\u00a0were so many places\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but the weather just\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0good. Then Switzerland looked like a good day, so I swapped things around so we could go up the mountain. On the back of that mountain there are little caves you can walk down with holes in the rock where you look out. I let them walk down first, then waited around the back with his parents\u00a0who stopped\u00a0anyone coming through, so\u00a0they’d\u00a0have a private moment. We could\u00a0just about\u00a0see\u00a0them. He knelt down, popped the question, she said yes,\u00a0and\u00a0we came around filming it. It took a village. A lot of people knew because his dad\u00a0couldn’t\u00a0keep quiet about it, and afterwards all the other guests were congratulating and hugging. It is like a little family. The further you wait into a tour, the more people want to be part of it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Every trip is individual, but choose a trip that has something scenic \u2013 something iconic, the Eiffel Tower, a Swiss mountain, Norwegian fjords. If you want something a little out of the ordinary, I definitely think Scandinavia is a hidden gem. A lot of people don’t realize the mountains and fjords there are literally some of the most beautiful parts of the world. I’m biased \u2013 I live in Copenhagen and run trips through Denmark, Norway, and Sweden all the time \u2013 but there are so many viewpoints and photo stops that if you have bad weather for seven days, there’s still an eighth day. It can be done somewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Try to choose an itinerary where\u00a0you’re\u00a0not dead set on just one place. And if you want something out of the ordinary\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the Eiffel Tower, Swiss mountains, gondolas in front of the Colosseum, those iconic spots\u00a0\u2013\u00a0everyone’s\u00a0done those. If you got it done in a Norwegian fjord,\u00a0that’s\u00a0almost a\u00a0better story\u00a0for these times.
