I look at my watch again as a high-pitched screech rings out. A canary-yellow <em>el\u00e9trico<\/em> grinds around the corner. I throw my arm out to hail it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doors clang open. The <em>guarda-freio<\/em> and I exchange a cheery \u201cbom dia!\u201d and I climb the wooden steps, tap my card on the reader and claiming one of the single red seats by the window. I lean my head out the window of the half-empty wooden cart as it rattles and shakes its way from the tranquil Ajuda neighborhood to downtown Lisbon\u2019s Cais do Sodr\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m aboard the 18E, one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafalgar.com\/tours\/best-of-portugal?optionId=112\">Lisbon\u2019s<\/a> six tram lines that\u2019s usually overlooked by visitors who instead choose to jam themselves into the 28E line. But the experience of riding a vintage yellow Lisbon tram is about the feeling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the time travel of stepping into the wooden box from the early 20th-century, the warm breeze rustling your hair through the large open windows, the subtle creaking as you wind corners, the shrill of the bell as the driver warns a silly pedestrian that jumps out in front. Back to where trams began<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before they became stars of every visitor&#8217;s social feed, Lisbon\u2019s yellow trams were the veins of the city, taking locals to and from work. The <a href=\"https:\/\/getlisbon.com\/discovering\/lisbon-tram\/\">story begins back in 1873<\/a> when Lisbon introduced horse-drawn railcars \u2013 known as <em>carros americanos<\/em> (a nod to their U.S. origin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the summer of 1901, Lisbon had switched to electric power and launched the first electric-powered line along the riverfront between Cais do Sodr\u00e9 and Alg\u00e9s. It\u2019s why trams are called <em>el\u00e9tricos<\/em> in Portuguese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navigating Lisbon\u2019s steep hills and narrow hairpin alleys on standard tracks wasn&#8217;t easy. So local transit company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carris.pt\/en\/carris\/history\/\">Carris<\/a> \u2013 which still operates today \u2013 engineered compact, single-truck trams. Lisbon\u2019s tram lines today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lisbon\u2019s tram network once had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/visitlisboa\/posts\/%F0%9D%90%85%F0%9D%90%AE%F0%9D%90%A7-%F0%9D%90%9F%F0%9D%90%9A%F0%9D%90%9C%F0%9D%90%AD-lisbon-once-had-450-trams-in-operation-they-were-everywhere-reaching-th\/1463362072491798\/\">450 carriages<\/a> rattle across the city. When the city\u2019s post-war bus routes expanded and the metro arrived in 1959, the tracks were systematically ripped up. Today, just six lines remain operational (12E, 15E, 18E, 24E, 25E, and the famous 28E), run by a fleet of around 55 active trams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Lisbon\u2019s clanging yellow <em>el\u00e9tricos<\/em> remain the city&#8217;s absolute favorite way to travel around. There\u2019s something distinctly nostalgic about settling into the wooden carriages, the short and sweet railcars manage the thin alleyways, blind corners and 13% gradients in a way that any bus would struggle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps its golden age isn&#8217;t strictly in the past. There\u2019s current talks of expansion plans by the current mayor\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>28E<\/strong>: The most famous route climbs Lisbon\u2019s steep gradients and winds through narrow alleyways in Estrela, Lapa, Alfama and Mouraria. It\u2019s best to board at a terminal station \u2013 Campo de Ourique or Martim Moniz \u2013 to get a seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>12E:<\/strong> The shortest loop on the map, sweeping through downtown Baixa and up through Alfama to the castle. Ideal for a quick ride without fighting for elbow room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>15E:<\/strong> This line runs new, longer air-conditioned trams and runs from downtown to Bel\u00e9m. Your pilgrimage to\u00a0 fresh, cinnamon-dusted <em>past\u00e9is de nata<\/em> at the original bakery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>18E:<\/strong> A quieter neighbourhood route rattling from downtown Cais do Sodr\u00e9 along the river and up toward the grand Ajuda National Palace. This is mostly used by commuting locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>24E:<\/strong> Revived after 20 years! This line climbs from Chiado\u2019s Pra\u00e7a Luis de Cam\u00f5es, along the leafy high street of cool Pr\u00edncipe Real, and into residential Campolide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>25E:<\/strong> A great alternative to the 28E. Catch the Carris Classics Parade in June<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re lucky enough to be in town during the first week of June, you can catch the <a href=\"https:\/\/museu.carris.pt\/en\/parade\/\">Carris Classics Parade<\/a>. Once a year, Lisbon\u2019s prized historic fleet \u2013 meticulously looked after by the Tram Museum \u2013 actually rolls out into the sunshine and back onto active city tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a city-wide celebration of Lisbon\u2019s historic trams and vintage buses, with a dozen or so from the vintage fleet brought out for the occasion.
