Modern Prague

After decades in the iron grip of the Soviet Union, Prague has emerged as a vibrant Western city, as diverse a metropolis as you could hope to find in Europe. The city's mediaeval nucleus remains unscathed but new buildings have taken their place alongside the Baroque, the Gothic and the Art-Nouveau. The Dancing House, built in the 1990s, is one example: a representation of Fred and Ginger fashioned in metal, concrete and glass. And then there’s the Žižkov Television Tower, a construction finished 20 years ago that reaches high into the heavens.

Travelling through the Republic

On your way to Prague you’ll pass Plzeň, a city famous for its breweries and in particular, Pilsner beer. Leaving Prague, and moving south west, you’ll experience the spectacular landscape of the Moravian Karst, renowned for its graceful rolling hills, remarkable valleys and unusual geological features. And then there’s Brno, an attractive red-brick city, only six miles from the setting of the Battle of Austerlitz – where Napoleon based his plan of operations.
