From the glittering Eiffel Tower in Paris to the glistening coastlines of the French Riviera, you won’t be surprised to hear that France lures more travellers to its land than any other country in the world.
If you want to discover the variety this diverse country has to offer, we’ve picked out five of France’s must-see cities and regions in this article. Plus there’s a chance for you to win two places on our Wonderful France trip as part of our latest competition – find out more below.
Paris
The city of love and lights is one of the most visited capitals in the world. Whether you’re on the hunt for exquisite food, endless shopping, remarkable architecture, unbeatable museums or art that changed the world, you’ll find it here in Paris. The thing is, everyone wants a piece (and who can blame them?) But if you join one of our tours in Paris, you’ll enjoy more time experiencing the city and less time standing in queues, with VIP access to the major sights.
Arles
Arles is France’s largest city. Located in the south on the banks of the Rhône River, Arles is peppered with Romanesque architecture – including its 20,000-seat Amphitheatre. The city’s beauty is depicted in many works by famous artists like Van Gogh. And every summer since 1970, the photographic world descends on the city for Rencontres d’Arles festival – a celebration of their art. Come with us to Arles and you’ll meet our Local Specialist, who’ll give you the inside story of the city.
Avignon
Avignon was once the capital of the Catholic Church during the middle ages, and its medieval centre is literally bound by its past. Walls circle Avignon’s historical core, where you’ll find a grand fortress and the papal palace. The city sits on the left bank of the Rhône River and the ruined bridge that straddles it is something of an icon – not simply because it inspired the famous French song ‘sur le pont d’Avignon’. Join us on one of our tours of France featuring Avignon and your Travel Director will introduce you to all of these amazing historical sights.

Lyon
If you love gastronomy, you’ll love Lyon. France’s third largest city is the food capital of the world and is renowned for fine dining. Many of its dishes are traditional and simple, yet the ingredients and cooking techniques used are of an extremely high standard. You can sample everything from pig’s brain to more down-to-earth and hearty dishes like coq au vin, and its choice of eateries is endless. Come with us to Lyon and you’ll have free reign to explore its food scene, with our expert Travel Directors on hand to make a few recommendations.
French Riviera
The sun-soaked French Riviera is associated with glitz, glamour and miles of sparkling coastline. Cannes, Monte Carlo and Nice are regarded as Southern France’s quintessential summer playgrounds, and each tell their own story. Cannes is famous for its international film festival, a prestigious invitation-only event. Nice has something for everyone, with year-round sun, a bustling nightlife and some of the best food in France. And Monte Carlo is the world’s second-smallest country, renowned for its yacht-lined harbour, grand casino and the Monaco Grand Prix. Come with us on one of our tours featuring the French Riviera and you’ll have time to explore at your leisure.
