With winter now upon us, we have months of cosy days spent indoors to look forward to. For some of us, though, this time of year causes some serious cravings for warmer climes. If sun-soaked days sound enticing, these eight destinations for winter sun could be just what you’re looking for.
Iguassu Falls, Argentina
Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, these spectacular falls encompass 275 drops from heights of up to 82 metres, across an area of almost three kilometres. These tumbling falls sit within wildlife-rich rainforest with trails winding through the dense wilderness. By visiting in winter – when Argentina is in the midst of the southern hemisphere’s summer – travellers are treated to more impressive falls than in the cool and dry months.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With its long stretches of sublime coastline, vibrant street life and surrounding forest –all of which is overlooked by the statue of Christ Redeemer on Sugarloaf Mountain – Rio de Janeiro attracts visitors year-round. But the city is more popular than ever during winter, both for the flamboyant celebrations of Rio Carnival as well as the brilliant Brazilian sun.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
Jutting out from Costa Rica’s mainland into the Pacific Ocean, the Nicoya Peninsula is fringed with peaceful coastal stretches, bays hidden amidst rainforest, and small laidback beach towns. And that’s exactly what makes this part of the country so appealing. Our winter months coincide with Costa Rica’s dry season, when each day is drenched in sunshine.
Riviera Maya, Mexico
Further up the Americas in Mexico, it’s the Caribbean coast that becomes the centre of attention, or more specifically the Riviera Maya. White sand shores and turquoise sea lie alongside ancient ruins and a vast expanse of protected wilderness. Then of course there’s the irresistible local cuisine. With drier and cooler days than the rest of the year, winter is ideal for getting out and about to explore.
Hawaii, USA
With its Pacific Ocean setting and year-round warmth, Hawaii is a popular destination for winter sun, making these months the islands’ high season. But don’t let the crowds put you off. With sandy bays, volcanic landscape and national parks spread across this smattering of tropical islands, it’s easy to find your own pocket of Hawaiian paradise.
Galle, Sri LankaÂ
This harbour city’s setting alongside long stretches of sublime coastline, the elegant heritage of its old town Galle Fort, and its aromatic cuisine of seafood, spices, coconut and fresh tropical fruit, all ensure Galle remains one of the most alluring destinations in the country. Use the city as a base to explore its surroundings and soak up the local culture. Winter is the ideal time to visit, when the dry days are dry and there’s plenty of Sri Lankan sunshine to enjoy.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Over in Thailand, winter signals the start of the country’s dry season, while Northern Thailand has the additional draw of being cooler than the rest of the country. Combined, this makes winter the perfect time to explore Chiang Mai’s holy temples, bustling markets, forested mountains and tranquil paddy fields.
Sydney, Australia
With the Australian summertime in full swing during the northern hemisphere’s winter months, the country becomes increasingly appealing to travellers hailing from colder climes. Visit the culturally vibrant and outdoorsy city of Sydney to soak up some sun at the beach, discover the national parkland within the city’s perimeters, and see Sydney’s iconic sights.
