Animals of Australia

Recently updated on January 17th, 2020 at 10:26 pm

Australia’s animal kingdom is so unique and different and it’s one of the many reasons to visit this amazing country. Here are some animal species that you can expect to spot when you travel Down Under.

Cuddle a Koala and feed a Kangaroo

Of course a visit to Australia isn’t complete without a koala cuddle. At Cairns Tropical Zoo you’ll be able to hold one of these typically Australian marsupials and have your picture taken with them. You can also hand-feed kangaroos and see wombats, dingoes, as well as a variety of native birds.

Penguin Parade

Penguin Parade on Philip Island near Melbourne is the perfect spot to see wild penguins returning home after a long day of playing and looking for food in the ocean. They arrive here every night when the sun goes down to return to their burrows to rest. It truly is an amazing sight to see.

Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world and can actually be seen from space. The reef, which is a colourful sight in itself, is home to over 1,500 species of fish as well as, whales, dolphins and porpoises. It’s best seen snorkelling or scuba diving, or from a semi-submersible vessel.

See Crocodiles

If that’s all a bit too tame for you, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventuresย might be more your thing. Here you can take a boat ride through woods and rain-forests and spot many different species of wildlife such as colourful birds, reptiles and lots more.

Seals on Kangaroo Island

The name of this island is somewhat misleading I suppose, as there aren’t really any kangaroos jumping around here. However, this island is home to Seal Bay Conservation Park which houses the third largest sea lion colony in Australia. There is a boardwalk in the park from which you have amazing views onto the beach where the sea lions hang out. If you really want to get up close and personal with them, you can go on a guided tour that takes you down to the beach and right into the heart of the sea lion colony.
