If you’re looking for travel experiences that transport you to another world, it’s time you discovered bioluminescence. Defined as “the production and emission of light by a living organism” these mesmerising shimmers of blue and neon colours only happen after dark. And make you forget anything else exists. Find out more about the Trafalgar tours that offer a sight of this magical natural phenomenon.
What is bioluminescence?
Otherwise known as “sea sparkle”, bioluminescence is natural chemical reaction that happens within marine species like plankton, fish, bacteria and jelly fish.
They gather energy from the sun during the day, then release it at night in an intoxicating blue or neon (or even reddish) glow when there’s a wave break or sudden splash in the water. The reproduction of plankton is the most common cause. It’s relatively rare worldwide. But if you know where to look… you’re in for a jaw-dropping experience.
Where are the best places to see bioluminescence?
You’re going to want to listen to this. Oh, and just remember to go after dark.
Hạ Long Bay, Vietnam
One simply hasn’t lived without a trip to Vietnam. In addition to mouth-watering pho, friendly locals, sweeping landscapes and floating markets… (interested yet?) – its beaches come alive after dark. Particularly Hạ Long Bay. Venture here late at night when the fishing boats’ lights have died down and wait in anticipation. Gaze in awe as time stands still. Say yes to a truly bucket-list worthy experience.

The Waitomo Caves, New Zealand
Minutes after arrival, you’ll realise that Mother Nature was showing off when she created New Zealand. Feel goosebumps stir as you step into the Ruakuri Caves in Waitomo. Where a sea of twinkling glow worms are waiting – producing a starry galaxy of dancing green and blue hues. Three hours’ drive from Auckland, you’re in the centre of Maori culture here in Rotorua. And trust us, all your life’s troubles will melt away.
