When is summer in South Africa? December – February

South Africa’s summer is hot, hot, hot and ideal for beach vacations. The Cape’s sunny coastlines offer enticing turquoise waters and golden sands, while its cities buzz with festive energy. December, January and February are a great time for summer beach escapes in Cape Town, the Garden Route, or KwaZulu-Natal.

It’s not the best time for safari as the thick vegetation can reduce visibility, and wildlife will be dispersed. On a positive note, it’s low season so it will be less crowded, plus there will be lots of baby animals and gorgeous light for photography.

While it’s low season for safari, it’s peak tourist season for tourism. Expect higher prices and busy attractions, especially over the December holidays. Summer also brings a line-up of events and festivals, such as the Up The Creek music festival in February, and Africa’s largest art fair, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

When is autumn in South Africa? March – May

March is the perfect time for late-summer beach adventures, wine tourism, and safaris. The Cape Winelands begin their harvest season with special vineyard tours and food festivals in March and April. If you’re here for safari (which, of course you are), take note that game viewing also begins to pick up as vegetation thins and wildlife becomes more visible.

Events continue through autumn with the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and AfrikaBurn usually taking place in March or April. Note that weather along the Eastern and Western Cape coasts can be quite variable in May.

When is winter in South Africa? June – August

Winter in South Africa signals prime safari season. Dry conditions in regions like Kruger National Park mean animals gather around waterholes – making them easier to spot. It’s also the time for snow-capped peaks in the Drakensberg Mountains with clear, brisk days ideal for hiking.

Whale watching season commences in June, especially in Hermanus, a seaside gem of the Western Cape. You’ll see Southern right whales on their long journey from the Arctic to warmer waters. Winter also brings better swell for surfers, with the J-Bay Open Surf Competition usually taking place in July. Then by August the wildflowers start to bloom across the Western and Northern Cape.

Winter in South Africa means fewer tourists, better deals and quieter experiences.

When is spring in South Africa? September – November

Spring is a bit of an all-rounder shoulder season. In the Western Cape, carpets of wildflowers blanket the landscape in bursts of color. Temperatures rise again so wildlife is still active, and coastal towns spring to life again.

It’s a great time for game drives and spotting the Big Five, especially in September when it’s still the dry season in Pilanesberg National Park, Shamwari Private Game Reserve, Madikwe Game Reserve and Phinda Private Game Reserve.

Regional temperature differences across South Africa

South Africa is a big country and the weather varies widely by region. The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. In contrast, the Kruger Region is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and dry, mild winters – this makes winter the prime safari season.

Along the Garden Route, the climate is moderate and lush, with rain spread throughout the year and generally mild temperatures. It’s great for hiking all year! Then the northern regions are hotter and more arid, especially in summer, plus dry, sunny winters are ideal for game viewing.
