I know it’s only May, but I just can’t wait for Christmas to roll around. It’s my favourite time of year and I simply love getting into that festive spirit the weeks before. I love the sparkling lights, the carolling, the colourful decorations, but most of all I love strolling around Christmas markets, especially the ones in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Here’s why.
The food
Whether you’re a sweet tooth or a lover of all things savoury, you won’t go hungry at a Christmas market. You’ll find stalls selling pancakes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, heart shaped gingerbread biscuits, thick slices of freshly baked stolen and bananas and strawberries dipped in chocolate. You can also feast on a roasted pork sandwich, succulent bratwurst with sauerkraut or potato noodles with bacon and sauerkraut.
The drinks
Walking around in the cold winter air calls for a big mug of hot Gluehwein, which is the German version of mulled wine. Or try the Feuerzangenbowle which is mulled wine as well, but for this drink a rum-soaked sugar loaf is set on fire which then drips into the drink. If that’s not for you, you can opt for a pint of German beer or hot chocolate as well.
The Christmas gifts
If you’re stuck for ideas on what to give your family members, there are lots of potential presents to be found on Christmas markets. You’ll usually find plenty of stalls selling handmade crafts, hand carved Christmas ornaments, candles, etc.
