Allegedly created at NYC’s Waldorf Astoria around the 1920s, red velvet cake now enjoys cult-like status among baking fiends, who love its rich crimson colour and layers of sticky-sweet icing. Fun fact: its red colour originally came from beetroot, but today food colouring generally does the job instead.

Taking its name from the platter it’s served on, thali is an Indian dish combining servings of fragrant curry, crunchy poppadoms, chutneys and flavourful side dishes. It’s pretty as a picture to look at and tastes amazing too, thanks to myriad herbs and spices.
