Trafalgar’s Travel Directors are the heartbeat of our brand, guiding our guests on journeys across the globe and taking them deeper into each destination.

We met Jason Simpson – Travel Director of the Year 2017 – and asked him about winning this highly acclaimed accolade.

Jason Simpson, Travel Director of the Year

Congratulations for winning ‘Travel Director of the Year’. You’ve been praised by guests for your vast knowledge and willingness to always go the extra mile. How do you make your guest experiences special?

JS: “I pride myself on providing the highest possible personable service. As an entertainer, I want everyone to have fun so they can look back with laughter and fond memories. There’s a lot of information to digest, so I like using video for storytelling.”

Tell us about your secret travel spot.

JS: “I love taking guests to a primary school in Fez Medina, which you would never find on your own. The kids love it and they shout out in French as we walk by.

“Personally, Salamanca University, where I studied, has a beautiful little courtyard that I still like to visit. Hardly anyone knows about this but there is a mural, which is covered in graffiti; people who have completed their PHDs there are invited back to paint on the wall.”

If you could re-live a moment from your last trip, what would it be and why?

JS: “I always enjoy the first 15-30 minutes of arriving in a new country. While crossing borders, I love watching guests’ faces as they are transfixed and often speechless by what they see.”

What is the greatest gift you get from travelling?

JS: “Travelling is the world’s best educator as it opens your eyes, gives you a sense of appreciation, as well as gratitude for things you might take for granted.”

What inspires you about working with Trafalgar?

JS: “I love teaching guests about a place they’ve never been to while learning something new myself. You get addicted to the job and the history of each destination you travel to.”

What is your tip for feeling like a local when travelling and why?

JS: “Utilise the time and tell your Travel Director what you’re interested in. Spend a few hours in a city; sit down, order a coffee and watch the local life revolve around you; it’s a very special and intimate moment.”

Which travel quote do you live by?

JS: “I like this quote from Mark Twain because it talks about having a real sense of appreciation for life.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Join Jason on our guests’ favourite, Spain, Portugal and Morocco itinerary this summer.
