Stays with Stories: Norway's Hotel Geiranger

Recently updated on July 20th, 2022 at 08:50 am

On the shores of the UNESCO-listed Geiranger Fjord, at the foot of snow-capped mountains, it’s hard to imagine a more picturesque place to rest your head.

The unforgettable Hotel Geiranger, complete with 150 lush rooms, a panoramic terrace and international dining options, takes the phrase ‘room with a view’ to a whole new level – and you can experience it for yourself on our Nordic Adventure and Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords trips.

“I love it because of the dramatic nature. We have massive mountains, blue fjords and huge waterfalls,” explains Hotel Geiranger’s Maud Haldorsen. “My family has been running it since 1990 and I am the second generation of management.”

The historic hotel dates back to 1860 but has been enhanced with contemporary touches including floor-to-ceiling windows that offer mesmerising fjord panoramas from the bedrooms. “The thing that makes Hotel Geiranger so special and unique is its location by the Geiranger Fjord,” enthuses Maud. “There are so many things that Trafalgar guests can see and do here, in Geiranger. People from all over the world come here to see our unique nature. You have to see it to believe it.”

Moments from the hotel, dazzling waterfalls cascade down sheer cliffs into the glacial water below. In spring and summer, the mountains are a lush, verdant green framed by banner blue skies. You can take a kayak and paddle across the waters or enjoy a boat ride, breathing in the crisp Norwegian air. Look out for the rainbow displays that appear from the waterfall mists.

“Hotel Geiranger is actually located in the middle of the village, so it’s two minutes’ walking distance to everything you need,” explains Maud. Why not take a stroll around the idyllic village of Geiranger itself? Named “best travel destination in Scandinavia” by Lonely Planet, there’s plenty to explore. Visit the pretty Geiranger Church and walk along the Waterfall Path, which runs from the village to the Fjord.

After a day exploring the majestic Fjord and its surrounding nature, recline in Hotel Geiranger’s elegant 7th Heaven bar on the seventh floor or simply relax on your balcony and look out over the stunning nature in front of you. In the evening, enjoy a dinner of local, Norwegian or international cuisine at the hotel’s Restaurant Skageflå.

In the heart of Norway’s magnificent landscape, Hotel Geiranger is the ultimate destination for an authentic Scandinavian escape, and one of our favourite Stays with Stories. Be captivated by its awesome views and warm Norwegian hospitality on our Nordic Adventure or Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords trips.
