The Top European Destinations to Visit in the Snow

When dramatic mountain views are combined with historic architecture, the result is bound to be unforgettable. But it’s in winter, when the snow begins to fall, that these locations truly come into their own. We take a look at some of the top European destinations to visit when the snow arrives. 

Bled, Slovenia

This small town in the foothills of Slovenia’s Julian Alps is exceptionally picturesque at any time of year, owing to the glacial Lake Bled and its 11^th-century castle. But in winter, a covering of snow adds even more appeal to this remote setting, making a walk along the lake’s shores unforgettable.

Salzburg, Austria

Situated right by the German border, this Austrian city is backed by the spectacular Eastern Alps and divided by the Salzach River, with the Old City stretching along one side. Composer Mozart’s home town, Salzburg’s medieval and baroque architecture looks particularly magical with a fresh dusting of snow. 

St. Moritz, Switzerland 

Switzerland is renowned for its mountain towns and vibrant winter sports scene. St. Moritz is at the heart of this, having hosted the Winter Olympics twice and with an exceptional network of ski trails. But the town is also one of the most idyllic settings to stay in Europe, centred around a vast tranquil lake, with a dramatic backdrop created by the mountains.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

Over the border in northern Italy, it’s the mountain town of Cortina d’Ampezzo that attracts the most attention at this time of year. Situated at the heart of the Dolomites, this attractive town is a base for skiers, with plenty of chic restaurants and bars where visitors can enjoy a leisurely lunch and soak up the captivating views. 

Bergen, Norway

The Norwegian city of Bergen is situated on the southwest coast, surrounded by spectacular fjords and dramatic mountain scenery. Known for its colourful, illuminated houses that reflect along the water of the old wharf, the winter snowfall contributes to the city’s fairy tale appeal.

Neuschwanstein, Germany

The famous Neuschwanstein Castle and its exquisite surroundings encapsulate the image many people have in their mind of Germany’s Bavarian landscape. Thick fir forest and rugged mountains encircle the Romanesque Revival palace, creating an especially memorable scene during a snow-blanketed winter.

Tromso, Norway

Situated above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, the city of Tromso offers an incredible setting at any time of year. Its unique location makes it a great place to view the Northern Lights, as well as set off on excursions into the Arctic, where visitors are treated to the archetypal winter wonderland experience.
