7 immersive experiences you can only have on Trafalgar's tours

Recently updated on August 14th, 2023 at 01:33 pm

Countless hours of planning go into making your Trafalgar trip experiences worth remembering (for all the right reasons, of course). While many travellers join a tour to tick off the Eiffel Tower, view the Taj Mahal and taste-test every tapa in Spain, it’s the itinerary beyond the bucket list that makes each Trafalgar guided travel experience so special.

From connecting with locals to experiencing the culture to staying in one-of-a-kind places, our guided tour experience is all about the stories you hear and memories you’ll make along the way. And on each journey with Trafalgar you’ll no doubt walk away with a few unforgettable highlights.

Below we’ve highlighted seven special experiences you can only have on a Trafalgar trip.

Did you know…. The majority of our ‘Be My Guest’ experiences are family-run, multi-generational businesses and by supporting them we’re able to help preserve local customs and heritage and enrich the lives of our wonderful hosts.

1. Explore an organic olive oil estate in the Tuscan hills

There’s nothing more romantic than the image of rolling Tuscan hills with stone villages dotting the landscape. Your dream becomes a reality when we join Count Miari Fulcus for a special ‘Be My Guest’ dinner on his 15th-century organic olive oil estate. Set deep in the Tuscan hills, the location has been used for plenty of famous films like ‘Room with a View’ and ‘Tea with Mussolini’.

2. Discover indigenous culture in Canada

Life across the globe revolves around what we eat, so there’s no better way to get to know a culture than through food. One of our favourite Trafalgar trip experiences in Canada is with the Songhees Cultural Centre. Get to know the diversity of indigenous culture and gain an in-depth perspective on how the Lekwungen people used nature and indigenous plants. With this interactive ‘Be My Guest’ guided tour experience you’ll start with a harvest at the Rooftop Garden, then enjoy a cooking demonstration and Bannock bread-making workshop before lunch.

2. Meet the most liberated women of Turkey

Come face-to-face with the most liberated women in Turkey in the small village of Demircidere. This small but progressive mountain village is home to Turkey’s first female muhtar (village chief), breaking down barriers to gender equality since 1933. While here you’ll ‘Connect With Locals’ who will teach you how to bake traditional bread, then share a glass of the local wine over a very special ‘Be My Guest’ lunch.

4. Go behind the scenes with an Australian lifeguard

Bondi Beach is Australia’s most iconic patch of sand. It’s on this giant golden stretch that bronzed, beautiful locals soak in the sunshine by the sea. On a Trafalgar guided tour experience you’ll live out your own Bondi Rescue fantasy with our ‘Be My Guest’ segment. Join a local surf lifesaver for an exclusive tour through the Members Only area of Australia’s oldest surf life-saving club. Welcoming beach-goers since 1882, explore the iconic 20th-century building before perhaps the best part of this Trafalgar trip experience: lunch with views of the glistening Pacific Ocean.

5. Enjoy a traditional Costa Rican barbecue on a working ranch

Costa Rica is one of the most magical places to get in touch with nature, and where better than a wild 2000-acre working ranch. Don Alberto and Doña Ana Quintana invite you to join them for a special traditional barbecue dinner at Hacienda Pozo Azul. This ‘Be My Guest’ guided tour experience is a bonus as you’ll stay the night at the organic farm and enjoy eco-adventures across the property, from relaxing in the landscaped thermal pools to hiking to horse riding.

6. Lunch at a 15th-century farm in Scotland

Our journey tracing the footsteps of Mary Queen of Scots and several Scottish kings takes us into castles across Scotland. The narrative and history lessons continue when we ‘Connect With Locals’ at a 15th-century farm on the shores of Loch Ard. One of our favourite Trafalgar trip experiences in Scotland, the Wood family will be waiting to invite us into their home for a home-cooked lunch, to share tales of Rob Roy and enjoy a few foot-tapping ceilidh tunes.

7. Sing and dance with kids in Kenya

While on safari in Africa we make a very special stop at the Shangilia Children’s Home in Kenya’s Vihiga County. During the morning you will watch the older children practice music, dance and acrobatics before joining them for lunch. The centre supports around 60 children who have been orphaned, abandoned, neglected or abused. It provides them with stability and basic needs like house, food, clothing and education. Your visit is a ‘Make Travel Matter’ experience, helping transform the lives of these vulnerable children.
