10 amazing places to visit for winter sun in the USA

Recently updated on July 18th, 2023 at 04:57 pm

When it comes to travel during the winter season, we tend to find that people fall into one of two categories. You either embrace the chill and seek the best destinations for a winter adventure, or follow the warm weather.  If you tend to fall into the latter group, or you’ve simply had enough of icy footpaths and overheated buildings, we’ve put together a list that includes some of the best destinations for catching winter sun in the USA.

Palm Springs, California

Whether you’re seeking a warm US winter holiday destination for a couple of rounds of golf, something artsy or even just a break from the city, Palm Springs is the perfect US staycation! The Greater Palm Springs area definitely has its own kind of cool vibe year-round, although it’s not the kind of cool you’ll see on a thermometer.

Throughout the Coachella Valley, you can find several holiday rentals with private pools, perfect for lazing around and soaking up as much of that winter sun in the USA as possible. Or, if you’re in search of an activity more adventurous, a day trip to Joshua National Park is great for hiking and rock climbing.

St John, US Virgin Islands

If warm weather and tropical beaches is what you had in mind for a US winter holiday, then the US Virgin Islands is the perfect destination. Think soft white sand beaches with swaying palm trees, azure waters and an abundance of marine life.

Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is easily one of the most perfect destinations for catching winter sun in the USA. On average, the city gets 299 days of sunshine every year, with winter temperatures typically sitting around the 70℉ (21℃) mark.

New Orleans, Louisiana

While the temperature isn’t exactly warm and balmy (winter average tends to fall within the mid-60s, or 15℃), NOLA is certainly still a welcome reprieve from anywhere covered in snow. Plus, the holiday season tends to be the quietest time to visit New Orleans before Mardi Gras comes around.

The cooler weather doesn’t mean that there’s any less life in the city though. Keeping to true New Orleans style, there’s always a party and something to be celebrated! On Christmas Eve, the streets are lined with lit bonfires. Then, in late January, visitors can celebrate the Vietnamese new year.

Maui, Hawaii

While venturing to Hawaii does involve a bit of a journey, the balmy tropical weather that awaits makes the trip worthwhile. Oahu’s nearest neighbour, Maui, delivers beaches and relaxation by the dozen. And, while the temperatures do cool in Maui throughout the winter, their ‘cool’ really just means it’s 80℉  (26℃) instead of 87℉ (30℉), making it an ideal destination for catching some winter sun in the USA.

Charleston, South Carolina

For those seeking places to visit in the USA with history and heritage, look no further than Charleston. The entire state of South Carolina abounds in history and heritage. However, if you’re seeking adventure beyond the museums, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach are also both beautiful areas for making the most of the winter sun in the USA.

Boca Chica, Texas

Just north of the Mexico border is the dreamy coastal town of Boca Chica, Texas. You’ll feel as if you’ve completely escaped winter in the US here. During the winter, average temperature sits around the 70’s (20℃) and frequently reaches temperatures in the 80’s (25℃) too.

Due to a lack of infrastructure and a rustic city vibe, Boca Chica is often overlooked as a holiday destination. However, if you prefer a calmer staycation, you’ll be right at home here, with wide-open beaches perfect for swimming and beachside camping.

Pensacola, Florida

Every year, during the baseball off-season, teams tend to reside and train in either Arizona and Florida. When you look at the average winter temperature charts, it’s easy to see why. Known for having the warmest weather during the winter on mainland USA, it comes with little surprise that much of Florida is a popular destination for US staycations.

One of our favourite seafront destinations in the Deep South is Pensacola. Home to Pensacola Beach, which sits on the barrier sandbar of Santa Rosa Island.

Those seeking the winter sun in the USA can make the most of both urban city settings and long stretches of beach.

Savannah, Georgia

For those seeking the winter sun in the USA who find themselves in Georgia, be warned, as you might never want to leave! Just off the coast of Savannah, visitors can explore the many barrier islands and twisting waterways. Some favourites include Tybee Island, Sapelo Island and Jekyll Island.
