Alpine scenes and log fires are both very alluring, but sometimes there’s nothing quite like a bit of winter sun. From the planet’s most extraordinary cultural hubs to unspoilt wilderness and dense rainforest, here’s our pick of the best places to travel to in January.
Cambodia
December and January are considered the best months to visit Cambodia for their lack of rain and warm days, before temperatures begin to rise in February. These mild, dry days are perfectly suited to active exploration, taking in the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Angkor, and getting to know the culturally rich cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
India
January is in fact the coldest time of year in India, but this also makes it one of the best times to explore, with temperatures still far higher than much of the northern hemisphere. Whether hopping between sites in Delhi, rising early to catch sunrise at the Taj Mahal, or exploring the historical riches of Jaipur, a winter escape offers a chance to soak up the Indian sunshine.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica‘s dry season extends from mid-November until April, making winter the ideal time to visit; with warm days and little rain, both the verdant rainforest and the wild coastline prove enticing. From nature hikes and zip-lining through the forest canopy to kayaking and snorkelling off the sandy shores, a January escape affords visitors a true taste of Costa Rican Pura Vida.
Brazil
January is considered one of the best months to visit Brazil‘s buzzing coastline, with many locals also planning holidays at this time. By staying in Rio de Janeiro, visitors can experience the destination at its most vibrant, at a time when street celebrations abound.
Myanmar
January signals both hot and dry weather across Myanmar. Hop on a bicycle to explore Bagan’s temple ruins while savouring these warm days; set out across the calm water of Lake Inle on a longtail boat; or stroll through the streets of the country’s atmospheric capital, Yangon.
