With mile upon mile of lush undulating countryside, charming villages filled with thatch houses, and inspiring cities that reflect both innovation and history through their spectacular architecture, Britain looks pretty impressive from above. From England’s vibrant capital to the Scottish Highlands, we take a look at some of the inspirational images taken of Britain from the Sky.

London

England‘s exciting capital city is more than just a gateway to Britain, with many visitors finding it hard to tear themselves away from its historic sites and vibrant arts and culture. Not to forget the outstanding dining scene. Many of London’s most famous landmarks can be seen at once from the air.

London by Night 

For many, London becomes even more captivating by night, when the city is illuminated by millions of lights. This photograph captures the great city after the sun has gone down, with many of the major monuments visible among the twinkling lights.

Oxford

As one of the world’s most famous university towns, Oxford is among Britain’s most popular historic places. Oxford’s appeal can be seen in full glory in this aerial view of the city’s rooftops and church spires, as well as the surrounding countryside.

Cambridge

Long-time rival of Oxford, the university town of Cambridge is of equal appeal, both for its impressive architecture and laidback atmosphere. People come here to punt along the scenic River Cam, wander through historic colleges, and settle into charming cafes.

Bath

Testament to its historic importance, the city of Bath is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s Roman Baths are its biggest attraction, but with a wealth of ancient architecture and small boutiques to step into, it’s a rewarding city to explore.

Wales

It’s often the beauty of the Welsh countryside and mountainous national parks that is the most striking to visitors travelling though Wales. This photograph of the Welsh landscape from above shows just how verdant this area of Britain can be.

The Cotswolds

This patch of countryside, which is spread across five counties, is officially designated as an Area of Natural Beauty. But this comes as no real surprise when you encounter the region’s rolling hills and idyllic medieval villages.

The Scottish Highlands

Encompassing tranquil lochs and rugged mountaintops, the Scottish Highlands offer some of Britain’s most dramatic scenery. This landscape can be navigated by boarding the Jacobite train, which was used to film the Harry Potter scenes featuring the Hogwarts Express.

Edinburgh

The Scottish capital is celebrated for its rich arts and culture, as well as for its fusion of medieval, Georgian and neoclassical architecture. Edinburgh Castle sits on the city’s skyline, defining the view this city affords.

The Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is located within the Inner Hebrides archipelago, and is characterised by its wild coastline, medieval castles, and idyllic fishing villages. In its isolated setting, the island feels a world away from the rest of Britain, despite being connected to the Scottish mainland by bridge.
