Whether you’re after an old school, diner-style patty or a towering haute burger with all the trimmings, you’ll find it in New York City. All manner of beef and buns are served up here, with an abundance of restaurants, pop-ups and takeaways putting their own unique spin on the beloved burger. When you’re next in town, swing by one of these tasty joints for some of the best burgers in New York.

5 Napkin Burger

Yes, you will indeed need said number of serviettes to mop up the unctuous sauce in a 5 Napkin Burger. 10 whopping ounces of 100% Angus chuck from Aspen Ridge slathered in melting gruyere and rosemary aioli between a pillowy white potato roll, 5 Napkin take their burgers very serous. So seriously, in fact, that they eschew cardboard boxes and greaseproof paper in favour of proper china. You’ll even get a steak knife as a weapon of attack.

Emily

While the emphasis may be on Neapolitan pizzas at NYC hotspot, Emily, their burgers are seriously en pointe. In fact, they’re so crowd-pleasing, they often sell out each night. Entitled the EMMY, its patty is made from pasture-raised, dry aged beef and its bap is a unique pretzel bun that comes slathered in house EMMY sauce, gooey Grafton cheddar and caramelized onions. Eponymously named after its owner, Emily is a cosy yet cool joint with two locations in New York: one in Brooklyn and one in the West Village.

Acclaimed British chef April Bloomfield heads up this esteemed spot with a gastro MO of indulgent comfort food classics done well. The Spotted Pig does traditional pub grub with an upscale twist, and its legendary burger is a delight. Chargrilled, with Roquefort cheese and served with shoestring fries, its bun comes complete with immaculate criss-cross char marks.
