A full guide to Canada Day celebrations

Recently updated on October 6th, 2022 at 05:02 pm

Join us to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday party and be part of a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Why not revel in the fun and festivities with our personal top picks for art and nature lovers alike; authentic, local events that you’re not going to find in a guidebook. So, whether you’re a self-confessed foodie or mad about music, here’s how to add some celebratory flair to your Canadian holiday with Trafalgar.

Canada started its official celebrations on 1 July commemorating the same date back in 1867 when it was ‘born’ and became a single Dominion made up of three colonies. It continued to expand, eventually increasing to ten provinces and three territories before it became a full sovereign state in 1982. This incredible country, a pillar of strength to the western world, continues to be a global inspiration welcoming more than 20 million visitors every year.

Our trips to Toronto introduce you to the most cosmopolitan city in the country, which is the heartbeat of the sesquicentennial celebrations playing host to some of the most exciting events of the year. At the beginning of August SummerWorks Performance Festival invites more than 500 artists to showcase their talents through dance, live art, music and theatre along Queen Street West. While September sees the city embrace โ€œless sleep more artโ€ as Nuit Blanche participants transform the entire city into an artist’s canvas in an all-night mission.

On our Contrasts of Canada and Best of Eastern Canada trips, you’ll explore Niagara Falls, just a short journey from Toronto. If you’re feeling fit in October, why not take part in an unforgettable marathon from Buffalo, New York back to Niagara Falls? If the thought leaves you breathless, there are also shorter distances on offer to reach these enormous falls; or simply head out and support the runners to feel part of the event.

Celebrations continue across the country until the end of the year. With such vast beauty begging exploration, you can look forward to roaming freely in Banff National Park, Jasper National Park and Yoho National Park among many others on a choice of Trafalgar’s Canada trips.
