The beginning of July marks a significant moment in history for Canada and the United States, with both nations embracing the celebratory spirit in honour of Canada Day and US Independence Day weekend. For Canadians, this day in 2016 also marks the 100th anniversary of the WWI battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel, an official day of remembrance in Newfoundland and Labrador. From street parades and carnivals to spectacular fireworks displays, we take a look at the best ways to celebrate this occasion across North America.
Where to Celebrate Canada Day
Vibrant Canada Day celebrations take place across the country each year on July 1 celebrating the day Canada became independent. In Ottawa, the day is marked with pageantry and military drills on Parliament Hill, while Major’s Hill Park draws in the crowds for its generous offering of live performances, demonstrations and exhibits. In fact, this national anniversary is marked with events all across the city.
Within Vancouver, the waterfront landmark of Canada Place is a hive of activity as it welcomes one of the city’s biggest celebrations. Hosted by the Port of Vancouver, the Canada Day celebrations here are said to be the largest outside of Ottawa. Visitors can expect live performances, interactive exhibits, a parade and a fireworks display.
One of the most memorable places to mark Canada Day is the natural wonder, Niagara Falls. As the thundering falls tumble dramatically downwards, the scene is made even more impressive with the addition of illuminations and fireworks. The event also offers an arts showcase, parades and live entertainment to look forward to.

Canada Day in 2016
On July 1st, 1916 the members of the Newfoundland Regiment were positioned at Beaumont-Hamel in northern France to fight the Germans. There were 801 Newfoundland soldiers at Beaumont-Hamel that morning when they were given the order to go over the top. To honour the fallen heroes, the Government of Canada is hosting a signature commemorative ceremony at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France on July 2, and Trafalgar will be in attendance with 200 Trafalgar guests on a customized guided trip.
Joan Mahon, who is travelling with her family, tells us: “Participating in the 100th anniversary celebrations at Beaumont Hamel has been our dream for years. When I learned of the Beaumont Hamel Freedom 100 trip I knew this was our opportunity. My Grandfather Frederick LeGrow was the ninth person to volunteer in the First Newfoundland Regiment, and my mother had four uncles who enlisted. We are making this journey to walk in the footsteps of so many brave men before us.”
Doug Stevenson, another guest on the trip whose family members fought in both the First and Second World Wars, says: “My great grandfather fought in the First World War. I was stationed in Newfoundland in 1993 and worked on vehicles from the Newfoundland Regiment of today. Having had a family member who fought there, I feel I have a connection and I really want to show my respects to the soldiers who fought and died for our freedom.”
Where to Celebrate US Independence Day
Following on from Canada Day are the celebrations held in honour of America’s Independence Day on July 4th. In each state and city, parades and fireworks mark this annual occasion. One of the biggest celebrations takes place in Washington, D.C., where there are in fact a series of events. The main parade takes place on Constitution Avenue, followed by an evening concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building and a spectacular fireworks finale.
Boston is no less exuberant in its festivities at this time of year. Boston Harborfest begins on July 1st and continues across four days, claiming to be the United State’s biggest Fourth of July celebration. Historical re-enactments, walking trails and live performances are all held in addition to the main ceremony and fireworks display.
Chicago is another city that celebrates US Independence Day with vigour, with a wide range of weekend events. Eyes to the Skies Festival combines a hot air balloon showcase with a carnival, fireworks, and an Independence Day parade.
Over in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both drafted, a week-long celebration marks the significance of this day each year. Catch the July 4th parade, see live performances and gaze up at the city’s impressive fireworks display.
