Have you ever wondered how early is too early to put up Christmas decorations? If you (like us) think it’s never too early to get in the holiday spirit, we have good news. According to scientists, people who begin Christmas celebrations early are actually happier individuals.

Apparently, those of us who wheel out the Christmas tree at the start of November as soon as the bonfire embers diminish and the fireworks fade, are much happier and have a positive outlook on life. So, why hold back? If you haven’t already, now’s the time to drag those boxes of tinsel and baubles out from the loft and start making the house feel festive…

But don’t just take our word for it. Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown, told UNILAD: “Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, it’s most commonly for nostalgic reasons, either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect.

In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood.”

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

Steve McKeown, speaking to UNILAD

The nostalgia associated with festive decorations reminds people of when they were young, with no responsibilities. In our stressful lives, we have few opportunities to feel truly irresponsible and enjoy doing something fun. Who wouldn’t want to re-create those happy memories of putting up the decorations as a family and carefully placing the angel at the top of the tree? Why only have a couple of weeks of a beautifully decorated festive home when you can have a couple of months?

And hey, why stop at decorating the inside of your home? According to Mr. McKeown, those who decorate the outside of their house with lights aswell tend to be deemed more “friendly and cohesive” compared to their neighbours.
