Movie buffs rejoice! 2024 is going to be a blockbuster year for prequels, sequels and spin-offs. Iconic franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Mission: Impossible, Mad Max, Godzilla, John Wick and Captain America are all releasing new instalments. Meanwhile, hit films like Gladiator and Beetlejuice are getting long-awaited sequels. These films are famous not only for their captivating stories but also their cinematic genius and scenic appeal – and the actual filming locations are just as extraordinary as on screen. If you want to get immersed in the worlds of your favorite upcoming movies, you’ll want to explore the film locations. Our tip? From the beaches of Australia to the desert of Morocco and the cobbled streets of Prague, here are 8 film locations to inspire your 2024 trip. 

1. Gladiator 2 

Filming locations: UK, Morocco and Malta

The sequel to the iconic Gladiator film will hit cinemas on November 22, 2024. If it’s anything like the original, it’s going to be a blockbuster, with some stunning filming locations thrown in. 

We already know that production on Gladiator 2 has started and is filming across the UK, Malta and Morocco. Director and producer Ridley Scott has scouted locations to portray the Ancient Roman film setting and is building a massive set, including a large Colosseum in Malta. They’ll also film in Ouarzazate and the historic fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou in Morocco. 

The first Gladiator movie (released in 2000 and directed by Ridley Scott) also featured locations across Morocco and Malta. You can spot spectacular scenes in Ouarzazate, the Grand Harbor in Valletta and Fort Ricasoli in the village of Kalkara.

Take a Moroccan holiday to get immersed in the world of Gladiator. 2. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The world can’t get enough of Godzilla and King Kong. The highly-anticipated sequel to last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong has officially started filming on the Gold Coast in Australia. Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit cinemas on March 15, 2024. The details of the film are still largely under wraps, but we do know the crew are filming scenes in the coastal city. They’ve already shot some thrilling beach scenes on the dazzling Surfers Paradise Beach and the Glitter Strip.

The new Godzilla and Kong film will be a blockbuster, so get in now to see the spectacular filming locations without the crowds. 3. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two

Filming locations: UK, Malta, South Africa, Norway and Italy

The next instalment in the adventures of IMF agent Ethan Hunt will hit theaters on June 28, 2024. Director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise always put on a globe-trotting, visually stunning show, so we’re excited to see where they take us next in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two. So far, we know filming will take place in the UK, Norway, Malta, Italy and South Africa. Filming has already begun in England’s Lake District in the UK and in Puglia, Italy aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier. 

There’s no trailer yet, but there are a few seconds of footage. If you saw a cinema screening of Top Gun: Maverick last year, you may have seen the hair-raising video of Tom Cruise standing on top of a biplane and skydiving while filming in South Africa. If that’s anything to go by, we can expect some impressive aerial scenes in the next Mission Impossible.

4. Ballerina

Filming locations: Prague, Czech Republic

The John Wick spinoff movie, Ballerina, starring Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas has finished shooting in Prague, Czech Republic. The film is slated for release on June 7, 2024, and will feature stunning scenes in Prague and across the Czech Republic. The crew shot scenes in the Old Town of Prague by Dlouhá Street and around the National Theatre of Prague. Filming also took place in the beautiful region of Moravia, including the picturesque town of Štramberk and the city of Ostrava.

5. Beetlejuice 2

Filming locations: East Corinth, Vermont, US

Director Tim Burton filmed the first Beetlejuice movie in the quiet town of East Corinth in Vermont. Now 35 years later, he’s returning to this little village to shoot scenes for the second instalment of Beetlejuice. Burton originally chose East Corinth after spotting scenic postcards of the town while scouting for locations in New England. 

Beetlejuice 2 will feature original stars Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Willem Dafoe, along with new star Jenna Ortega. Fans will be thrilled to also spot some of the original filming locations, including the famous hilltop Deetz residence. The movie is set for release on September 6, 2024.

News of the Beetlejuice sequel is already spreading, with fans flocking to Vermont to see the locations in real life. 6. Furiosa

Filming locations: Outback NSW, Australia

The fifth instalment in the Mad Max series will center around a young Furiosa battling against two tyrannical warlords. Renowned for its spectacular Australian filming locations, the franchise is heading back Down Under. This time, the crew headed to Outback New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. 

The crew took over entire country towns and desert locations including Broken Hill, Silverton and Hay on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. After an extended drought, the filming brought a hive of activity and a much-need boost to the local economy. Directed by George Miller and starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, Furiosa is slated for release on May 24, 2024.

7. Captain America: Brave New World

Filming locations: Washington D.C., US

Marvel Studios and Captain America are traveling to Washington DC to film the latest instalment, Captain America 4: Brave New World. While the details are a closely guarded secret, filming is rumored to be taking place near the War Memorial. Directed by Julius Onah, the movie will star Sam Wilson as Captain America, along with Harrison Ford and Liv Tylor. It’s expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.

8. The Fall Guy

Filming locations: Sydney, Australia

Shooting has begun in Sydney for the film adaptation of ’80s TV series The Fall Guy. Directed by David Leitch, the movie will star Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, and Teresa Palmer. Gosling was recently spotted filming scenes in the city. The movie will center around a film stuntman moonlighting as a bounty hunter, based on the TV series that ran from 1981 to 1986. It’s expected to hit theaters on March 1, 2024.

So far, we’ve seen shooting taking place in Sydney’s CBD and at Boat Harbor. A large spaceship set is under construction on the beach on the southern headland of Kurnell.
