Wildlife, wilderness and natural wonder

Despite being almost as big as the USA, Australia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Energetic, beachside cities, where most of the population lives, contrast with seemingly limitless expanses of arid wilderness full of unusual geological features, and rainforests teeming with wildlife.

The site of the first British colony in Australia and now the country’s most dynamic city, Sydney is a laidback yet lively place where big city flamboyance meets Australian casual. Its most famous landmark is the iconic Opera House, which you’ll tour with our Local Specialist if you visit the city; their personal knowledge giving you an insight into one of the world’s busiest performing arts centres. We’ll give you the opportunity to see a different view of the Opera House on a harbour cruise, as well as taking you to the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Australia's wildlife

This vast country is home to hundreds of species of animals and plants found nowhere else in the world. We’ll take you to a variety of wildlife parks and nature reserves, where you’ll be able to feed kangaroos, walk through a colony of sea lions, spot koalas, crocodiles, possums, bats, reptiles and birds, and even ride camels.

At Watarrka National Park, a rugged reserve in the middle of the desert, you can climb to the rim of Kings Canyon for spectacular views of the landscape. And of course, no trip to Australia would be complete without seeing the Great Barrier Reef, from either a glass-bottomed boat or underwater observatory. The beauty of this multicoloured myriad of tropical fish and coral is like nothing else you will ever see.

Indigenous intrigue

Most of Australia’s cities were founded in the mid nineteenth century, yet its indigenous people are the oldest surviving human culture. And we’ll give you the chance to meet these people so you can learn about their fascinating civilisation first hand.

The Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park in Cairns celebrates the history of the inhabitants of the rainforest. Here you can learn about the medicinal uses of ‘bush tucker’ and watch a show mixing Aboriginal dance, fire making and storytelling. As well as viewing Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr and Nourlangie, you’ll have the chance to paint your own boomerang. No trip to Australia is complete without a trip to Uluru, or Ayers Rock, the incredible 348-metre-tall sandstone rock which is sacred to the Aborigines.
