In summer the Mediterranean might be defined by its cicada hum, salty swims, unhurried pace and the scent of wild oregano baking under a relentless sun. Navigating the Mediterranean region in summer calls for a mix of optimism and reality – it will be busy but there’s a good reason we keep returning. From limestone mountains dropping into the clear Adriatic, to the honey-hued ruins of the eastern Mediterranean, these Mediterranean countries offer the best version of summer.
1. Italy

While the Mediterranean climate brings hot and dry summers to the south, Italy thankfully compensates with a culture built around shade, refreshing gelato and daily dips. Make like the locals do in summer and make doing as little as possible the sport. A simple daily rhythm of morning swims, long lunches and a late-afternoon passeggiata (walk) with gelato will soon become routine.
Water temperature: A balmy 24°C to 26°C (75°F – 79°F)
Best month to visit: June or July, before the August Ferragosto rush jams the coastal roads and the locals leave the cities for summer break.

2. Greece

For a summer break, there’s nowhere in Europe like Greece. The Mediterranean country has one of the longest coastlines in Europe – with an estimated 6,000 islands and islets to explore. Though, fortunately just 200 are inhabited so that narrows your choices down, somewhat! In the height of summer, Greece’s white-washed villages reflect the sun and the Aegean sparkles brilliant shades of blue. Spend your days hopping between islands and dining at tavernas where octopus hangs on the line outside,
Water temperature: A refreshing 23°C to 25°C (73°F – 77°F)
Best month to visit: July, for that classic eastern Mediterranean energy and the cooling Meltemi winds that keep the islands breathable.
3. Croatia

Croatia is a great summer vacation destination for those who prefer seaside views with a side of ancient history (and a very cold glass of local Posip!). Walk the marble streets and high walls of Dubrovnik, or step through Split, whose old town is set within the Roman bones of Diocletian’s Palace. Along the Dalmatian Coast, gray limestone mountains drop straight into the impossibly transparent Adriatic Sea. While the rocky mainland beaches are stunning, the real magic is on the islands – hop between Hvar or Brač to discover a relaxed, Mediterranean stay.
Water temperature: A crisp and clear 22°C to 24°C (72°F – 77°F)
Best month to visit: June or September, when the crowds are thinner – though the sea is a lot colder in June.
4. Spain

Spain is a country that has designed its entire social calendar around the sun. In southern Europe, the heat isn’t something you fight – instead you invent thick stone walls, gazpacho and afternoon siestas! Once the day softens, the locals flow back into the streets to fill tapas bars and catch up on gossip. From the Costa Brava to the Costa del Sol to the rugged Balearic islands, Spain is one of the most rewarding summer vacation destinations on the map of the Mediterranean with no shortage of coastline.
Water temperature: Ranging from 21°C (70°F) in the Atlantic north to a toasted 26°C to 28°C (79°F – 82°F) on the Costa del Sol.
Best month to visit: June, when the festivities are just starting and the landscapes are still lush before the August bake. September remains warm for late-summer breaks.
5. Portugal

Facing the brisk Atlantic Ocean, Portugal technically isn’t part of the Mediterranean region, but the country still has that southern European feel. The Portuguese coast has a wild energy and is much cooler than Europe’s seas. In Lisbon or Porto, the Mediterranean climate is softened by the ocean’s influence, meaning hot, dry summer days turn to cool (often chilly) nights. Come for the custard tarts, sunny days and crisp vinho verde.
Water temperature: A bracing 18°C to 20°C (64°F – 70°F)
Best month to visit: June, specifically for the Santos Populares festivals in Lisbon and Porto when the streets smell like grilled sardines and everyone is outside dancing. September is also lovely for late-summer warmth.

6. South of France

Southern France is where the Mediterranean dream gets its gloss, but look past the yachts and you’ll find a relaxed Provençal lifestyle. Spending a day at the glitzy pebble beaches of Nice then explore the wild, flamingo-filled wetlands of the Camargue. The French Riviera is a great summer vacation destination for anyone who wants a three-hour lunch, salty swims, and afternoon games of boules.
Water temperature: A warm 22°C to 24°C (72°F – 75°F) along the Côte d’Azur.
Best month to visit: June or early July, to catch the lavender fields in the Luberon before they are harvested and the August crowds arrive.
7. Montenegro

In Montenegro the mountains don’t just meet the sea, they lunge into it creating fjords that feel almost Nordic. But you’re in the Balkans along the Adriatic Sea, where you can dive into the clear waters, cruise across the Bay of Kotor and visit charming Mediterranean towns like Perast. Montenegro is a great summer vacation destination for those who want the glamour of the Riviera but with more soul and better prices.
Water temperature: A refreshing 22°C to 24°C (72°F – 77°F)
Best month to visit: June or July, when the mountain air is still cool enough to hike but also swim.
8. Albania

If you want the Mediterranean without a filter, head to Albania. This up-and-coming eastern Mediterranean country is the place to be this summer. You might see concrete bunkers sit next to ancient olive groves, and laze on beaches in the south – particularly around Ksamil and Himarë – that rival anything in Greece. The pace of life is unhurried, the hospitality warm. You can now discover the rugged coastline on Trafalgar’s new Balkans Coast Explorer.
Water temperature: A pleasant 24°C to 26°C (75°F – 79°F) along the southern Ionian stretch.
Best month to visit: September, when the hot dry summers have mellowed.

What Mediterranean countries are best for summer vacations for families?
Italy, Greece and Spain are ideal for family travel. Southern European and Mediterranean countries don’t treat children as an inconvenience, but a part of life and the community. Italy’s plazas are natural playgrounds where kids can run safely while parents enjoy a slow aperitivo, and Greece’s shallow, turquoise bays – especially in Crete or Corfu – are practically giant bathtubs.
When is the best time to visit the Mediterranean? (June, July, or August?)
It’s really about your personal preferences. Here is a breakdown of each month across the Mediterranean.
June – early season sweet spot
June is a gorgeous time to visit when the Mediterranean hasn’t been sunburnt brown by the dry summer heat. It’s early in the season, so you’ll experience better prices and locals who are genuinely happy to receive you. The heat is a warm embrace rather than a heavy blanket – ideal for hiking and sightseeing, but still a little chilly for swims in the sea.
July – entering peak season
By July, the Mediterranean region is buzzing with events and people. Think the clatter of busy night markets, packed beach clubs and a celebration of the sun each and every day. It’s hot during the day and the sea is finally warm enough to enjoy long dips.
August – peak season, peak crowds and heat
August is truly the deep end. In Southern Europe, the intense, dry heat hits and school children are on vacation – so most locals flee the cities for the coast. To enjoy August, visit coastal places or high altitudes, and accept that between 2-5pm the best activity is to hide inside with the blinds pulled. It’s the busiest month, but if you love the heat and the peak-summer buzz, it’s the best time for a holiday.
