First overseas trip, first choice

Eating tortellini in Bologna for her mum and grandpa
Bianca’s Nonna emigrated from Italy, and it had been her mother’s dream to take her grandfather to Italy. Sadly it never came to fruition, and Bianca lost both her grandfather to heart disease and my mother to breast cancer in 2003.
“In my grief, I decided to take the trip to Italy for them. It took 20 years for me to make it happen,” she says, adding that her husband is not a foodie and a trip would push him outside his comfort zone. For this reason they opted to go guided with Trafalgar.
“We chose Trafalgar’s Great Italian Cities because it was one of the few that makes a stop in Bologna. This was the best decision!
“Our tour director, Victorio, was entertaining, accommodating, and made us feel taken care of the entire time. From booking the trip all the way through the flight home, everything went so smoothly. Trafalgar made our first trip to Europe an amazing experience.
“The moment that stands out was our afternoon in Bologna… We were looking for just the right place to stop and have our tortellini en brodo (tortellini in broth), true to the way my nonna served it. We found the perfect place, Bar Il Calice on Via Clavature. The first taste of the tortellini brought me to tears – tears of joy. It was so delicious, but beyond the taste, it was the feelings that this dish evoked in me.
“My sweet husband reached out and held my hand, like he knew what this moment meant to me. And I knew there was no one else I would have wanted to experience this with but him.
“We did it, we took the trip my mom and my grampy had always wanted to take. We tasted authentic tortellini in Bologna, and learned how similar it is to my family’s recipe.
“Throughout this adventure, my husband and I connected on a level like never before, because of the magic of Italy and the comfort that Trafalgar’s tour offered us. We lived in the moment the whole time we were there.”

Facing a fear of travel with Trafalgar
“The best part of my Trafalgar tour was the sense of personal achievement to overcome a lifetime fear of travel,” says Jayne C. “Four generations of my family are well travelled, but it took until I was 55 to embark on my first big OE – a solo 29 day tour of Europe [with] Trafalgar.”
As a 10-year-old, Jayne had a scarring experience as an unaccompanied minor battling severe weather that grounded planes airlines. It left it’s mark on her as even domestic flights would evoke an irrational sense of dread that she cannot explain.
“Yearning to overcome it, I chose a Trafalgar tour for my first foray braving long-haul travel on my own,” explains Jayne.
“It was fantastic having the safety of a tour, the encouragement of fellow travellers, and a kind tour director to be alongside, through the inevitable challenges of travel. I even developed enough confidence, to frequently venture off solo in free time to see even more than the itinerary.
“I can’t wait to keep stretching myself to embark on further travels and build on the courage and confidence I’ve begun.”

“My first solo trip ever”
“I have always dreamed of going to Europe. I decided that 2023 was finally my year to go,” says Alyssa R. “This was my first solo trip ever, and it was also my first time traveling.
“I was nervous and scared but so excited to experience a dream of mine. Booking with Trafalgar was the best decision I made.
“I was worried that going with a travel group I wouldn’t be able to do what I wanted to do but they completely customized my trip. I got to do everything I wanted and more.

A Christmas miracle
“We had been planning our very special, once-in-a-lifetime, Irish Highlights trip for over a year. We had decided to go at Christmas time as we knew it would be magical. Just a few days before our trip. I lost my passport,” says Joy K. “Unfortunately, this threw a huge wrench into our plans.
“The trip was only myself and my two grown children, so I begged them to go and still enjoy the trip without me. I had already contacted our spectacular tour manager Terry, and knew my kiddos would be in great hands. I put my son on a plane in Orlando and my daughter flew out of Indianapolis. Once they landed in Dublin, they were taken care of by one of the best humans ever. Terry knew that things were not as expected and he made sure that they felt part of the group!
“I then proceeded to make a 10 hour round-trip drive down to Miami, got a new passport, and hopped on the next nonstop plane to Ireland. Planes, trains, and buses later, I was able to meet up with the travel group on Christmas Eve!
“Terry helped surprise my kids who did not know I was on the way! To have missed this trip would have been a great regret, but instead, thank you to Trafalgar and everything they did it was, the trip of a lifetime! Christmas together in Killarney, Ireland will be a memory I tell for years to come!
