How to celebrate Pride around the world in 2022

Recently updated on October 14th, 2021 at 11:35 am

There are so many ways to celebrate Pride in 2022, as hopes grow of a return to festivals and parades happening in real-life for the first time since 2019. Grab your rainbow flag and get out there in support of the incredible, diverse LGBTQIA+ community.

In 2020 and 2021, the community shifted to virtual events due to the pandemic but, fingers crossed, we’ll be able to celebrate together for World Pride Month 2022 . The fun starts early summer in June and will shimmy all the way to September.

From Pride parades to parties, seminars, demonstrations, films, concerts, marches and more, here’s how to celebrate Pride month 2022 in person – and online – around the world.

Pride 2022 in North America

June is Pride month in America, honouring the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. From the streets of New York City to the coast of California, North America paints itself rainbow for the whole month of June.

From New York City’s Pride event on June 1, to Chicago, Cincinnati and San Antonio TX all holding Pride events on the last weekend of June, you will find a Pride event happening across the US during most weekends in June.

Pride is big news in Toronto where over the last two weekends of June there are 70 individual events showcasing more than 130 2SLGBTQ+ artists.

North of San Fran, wine region Sonoma County hosts a number of Gay Wine Weekends throughout June, Atlanta Black Pride Weekend kicks off in October and Miami Beach Pride Festival and Parade Weekend happens in late September/early October, with dates as yet to be announced.

As you can imagine, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Pride events in the United States of America and Canada.

Pride 2022 in Europe

Our Travel Director Ed lives in Brighton, England, and says that his hometown and Berlin host the biggest Pride events in all of Europe.

“Where other cities may get third place X Factor contestants to perform, we have had Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and [in 2021] it was to be Mariah Carey,” he says. “We get [around] 500,000 visitors for Pride. It is huge for the economy, but this will now be the second year in a row that it’s cancelled.”

Instead of a big parade and event in August, there is talk of a beach barbecue or smaller street party due to restrictions.

“After all this waiting, maybe in 2022 we will have Cher or Madonna to perform,” says Ed.

“When we are able to travel again, Pride will be a massive celebration!”

In Europe, Pride is celebrated all summer long. Look for major events in cities including Vienna, Oslo, Lisbon, Madrid, Budapest, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Madrid, Bristol, Palermo, Amsterdam, Prague, Berlin, Frankfurt, London and more.

Pride 2022 in Australia and New Zealand

Down under most major Pride events fall during the summer, including the incredible Sydney Mardi Gras, which will next take place in February 2022. Throughout June, however, Sydney Pride Festival will host dozens of events, offering plenty of ways to celebrate Pride.

Next door in New Zealand it’s a similar story, but Queenstown’s sold-out Winter Pride NZ will bring plenty of rainbow cheer to the ski slopes in August or September.

Pride 2022 in Central and South America

Brazil is a huge country with two mega Pride events. Every year Sao Paulo hosts a huge parade at the start of June. In 2021 it hosted a colourful virtual event instead, which you can check out here. In Rio de Janeiro they are still gearing up to celebrate future Prides, with a hope that the 2022 event will return to its former splendour on Copacabana Beach.

In Mexico, Playa del Carmen Pride takes over in June and Mexico City runs events throughout the month of June. In Costa Rica, the Manuel Antonio Pride event takes place in July, and in Buenos Aires they are holding out hope for sunny 2022 event.

Pride 2022 in Asia

Asia’s biggest LGBTQ+ event brings a mega annual parade and plenty of after parties to Taipei each October. Wander the “rainbow road” outside City Hall and enjoy light shows.

In the Philippines, Metro Manila Pride hosts a festival of events every June. In 2021 the events were virtual, but there’s always a parade. Unfortunately, parades are seen as protesting and often lead to arrests despite the peaceful nature.

In Singapore it’s still technically illegal to be gay, even though the law is rarely enforced. Since 2009 an event called Pink Dot has been raising queer visibility in the country, although in 2021 the event went virtual due to the pandemic.

Pride 2022 in Africa

While Cape Town celebrates Pride in March, Johannesburg parades in October and went ahead with a live event in 2021 to celebrate the 31st Johannesburg Pride Parade and Festival.

An online event also took place, Pride Afrique 2021, which was a virtual celebration of the voices and stories of LGBTQ+ Africa at home and abroad.

Pride online

Online there are seemingly endless ways to celebrate Pride from the comfort of your home. There are so many films and events to access online to learn more about the LGBTQ+ history and culture.

Dive into the best movies, TV shows and documentaries that celebrate Pride and the diversity of the community. Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video always set up special pages to honour Pride Month, as do Netflix and Amazon Prime. Other LGBTQ+ movies and shows to put on your radar are The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Moonlight and Secret Love.
