Peru spans several landscapes, altitutudes and climates: the coast is dry and mild, the Andes mountains are cool and often wet, and the Amazon is hot and humid. The dry season (May to September) is best for trekking and sightseeing, especially in Cusco and Machu Picchu. Pack layers—temperatures can swing dramatically from day to night.

Peru is famous for the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and high-altitude Andean culture. But it also boasts Amazon rainforest, desert coastlines, colonial towns, and a world-renowned culinary scene.

Peru is a global culinary hotspot. Signature dishes include ceviche, lomo saltado, causa, and ají de gallina. It’s also home to pisco, the national spirit. Don’t miss street food in Lima or traditional Andean fare like quinoa soup and roasted corn in the highlands.

May to September is the dry season and best for hiking, especially in the Andes. This is peak time for visiting Machu Picchu. If you’re heading to the Amazon, these dry months offer easier travel. For fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months—April or October.

Spanish is the official and most widely spoken language in Peru. Quechua and Aymara are also official in regions where Indigenous communities live. In tourist areas, you’ll find English speakers in hotels and restaurants, but learning a few Spanish phrases goes a long way.

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Peru, but it is appreciated. In restaurants, a 10% tip for good service is typical. It’s also polite to tip porters, tour guides, and drivers. Round up taxi fares or leave small change for hotel staff as a kind gesture.

This depends on your nationality. Many travellers don't require a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days, including UK citizens and many EU passport holders. Always double-check visa rules for your nationality before you travel, as entry requirements can change.

Peru uses plug types A and C. The standard voltage is 220V at 60Hz. Many US and EU travellers will find compatible sockets, but may need a voltage converter for certain devices Check your device’s voltage label to avoid damage.

ATMs are easy to find in cities and tourist spots, though rural areas may have limited access. Most machines accept international cards. Be cautious of withdrawal fees and carry some cash as a backup, especially for markets or small vendors.

Tap water in Peru is not considered safe to drink. It’s best to stick to bottled water or use a filter bottle. Be cautious even when brushing your teeth or ordering drinks with ice in less-developed areas.

Layering is key. You’ll want lightweight clothes for warm days, and jackets for chilly Andean nights. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, good walking shoes, and a rain jacket—especially if visiting in the wet season.

To experience the highlights, plan for 10–14 days. That gives you time for Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, plus perhaps the Amazon or Lake Titicaca. With Peru’s altitude and geography, slower travel makes for a better trip.

Peru hosts incredible festivals year-round. Don’t miss Inti Raymi in June (Festival of the Sun), Semana Santa (Holy Week), and the vibrant Virgin of Candelaria in February. These festivals showcase Peru’s fusion of Indigenous and Catholic traditions.
