Canada visa FAQs

U.S. citizens do not need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada, as long as they are travelling with a valid U.S. passport. However, they must also carry proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport. For more details, please visit Canada's International Travel Information websitehttps://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Canada.html.

Australian citizens don’t need a visa for short visits (up to six months), but they must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before flying to Canada. For official Australian travel advice, visit: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/americas/canada

British citizens don’t require a visa for visits under six months, but if arriving by air, they need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead. You can check the full entry rules here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/canada/entry-requirements

Most tourists, including visa‑exempt travellers and Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) holders, can stay in Canada for up to 6 months, or until their passport expires, whichever comes first. Super Visa holders, for parents/grandparents of Canadian citizens, get between 2–5 years per entry.

Yes. If you’re in Canada as a visitor and wish to stay beyond your allowed period (usually six months), you must apply to extend your status at least 30 days before expiry. If you apply on time, you can stay under “maintained status” until a decision is made.

There are 53 visa‑exempt countries whose citizens can visit Canada for short stays without a visa — but except for US citizens and permanent residents, all others must obtain an eTA if arriving by air.

If you require a visa (i.e., are not visa-exempt), you will need:

  • A valid passport
  • Completed visitor visa application
  • Supporting documents: proof of funds, travel itinerary, accommodation details
  • Biometrics (photo + fingerprints), usually required
  • Visa fee (CAD 100)

Check the official IRCC site for detailed application steps.

Travel medical insurance isn’t strictly mandatory to obtain a Canadian tourist visa, but it’s strongly recommended, especially for visa-required travellers. Visitors must show they can cover medical costs or any emergencies during their stay.

Processing times vary by your country of application and whether biometrics are required. In general, applications from outside Canada/US may take several months, and you should add 3–4 months if you're mailing your application. It is advised to apply well in advance, ideally 3–4 months before travel.
